Where to stay in Chamonix
Choose a Chamonix base by the mountain departures you expect to repeat. Central Chamonix suits dining and mixed sightseeing; Les Praz puts Flegere into the conversation, while Argentiere, Les Houches and Vallorcine favor different ski areas. Servoz is a genuine valley village but adds a connection before skiing. Check the hotel entrance, stop and lift base together: the valley name alone says very little about the morning journey.

Central Chamonix: dining and mixed mountain days

Central Chamonix is the strongest all-round base when some days involve skiing and others involve sightseeing, shops or meals. It gives a mixed group a practical meeting place and a broader choice of evening activities than the smaller valley villages. The main station, valley transport stops and different mountain departure points sit around the center, but not at a single doorway. Compare north-central addresses with Chamonix Sud rather than treating the whole center as one compact hotel block.
The main compromise is that the major ski areas still require a specific approach. Brevent has an uphill station access, while Grands Montets, Flegere and Les Houches are separate valley journeys. Check the nearest useful bus stop, service hours and the final walk with equipment. A central address is not evidence of ski-in ski-out accommodation. Confirm room noise where buildings face busy streets or evening venues, and consider a smaller village instead if you intend to ski the same area almost every day.

Les Praz is a genuine village choice when Flegere is likely to feature repeatedly in your ski or mountain plans. The church, village setting and nearby lift access make it different from staying among central Chamonix's shops. It can work well for travelers who prefer a quieter evening base but still want to reach the town for meals. Check the precise accommodation location: village-edge properties and addresses farther along the valley can have quite different walks.
Use the gondola entrance, railway stop and current bus route as separate reference points. A hotel close to the village is not necessarily beside all three, and ski equipment makes a casual walking estimate less useful. You will still need valley transport for other ski areas and for some evenings in central Chamonix. Check the last return instead of assuming late services. Choose the center for the broadest independent dining routine, or Argentiere if Grands Montets is the stronger priority for your skiing.

Argentiere suits a stay centered on its village and the Grands Montets area. It has its own accommodation, shops and evening places, so choosing it need not mean returning to Chamonix for every meal. The appeal is a more focused upper-valley routine rather than access to every mountain from one hotel. Inspect the building's position relative to the lift approach and village services, particularly when traveling with children or carrying your own equipment.
Confirm current lift operations and the terrain relevant to your ability before selecting this base solely for skiing. Historical maps can show infrastructure that is not available on the dates you travel. Other valley ski areas remain separate bus or road journeys; the railway is useful for village movement but does not deliver you directly to every lift. Ask about the final walk from the nearest stop and your school's meeting point. Central Chamonix is a better fit when your evenings and non-ski sightseeing are equally important.
Mont Blanc Natural Resort: Grands Montets accessLes Houches: village life and its own slopes

Les Houches is a practical comparison for families and visitors who expect to use its own ski area repeatedly. The village has a more residential feel than central Chamonix and offers a credible base for a stay that does not revolve around the town's evening venues. Decide whether your property is most convenient for Prarion, Bellevue or the village itself. Those names represent different daily approaches, and a general Les Houches address is not enough to establish lift convenience.
Check lesson meeting points and pass coverage with the relevant operator. The valley bus and rail options help with wider outings, but the last leg to a lift may still require walking or another connection. For evenings in Chamonix, read the actual return timetable rather than assuming unrestricted late travel. A lift-side property can be more useful than a village-center room for early ski starts; the reverse may suit non-skiers. Choose this base for its own routine, not as an automatically cheaper equivalent of central Chamonix.
Chamonix tourism: Les Houches skiingVallorcine: quieter upper-valley accommodation

Vallorcine suits visitors who value a smaller mountain village and are happy to organize the rest of the holiday around that position. It can be a meaningful base for access to the Balme sector when the relevant lifts are operating. The accommodation pattern is more scattered than central Chamonix, so identify the actual hamlet or building, not only the commune name. Quiet surroundings are useful only if the daily journey works for everyone in the group.
Check the walk to the gondola and railway station, then confirm the services for your dates. Repeated outings to central Chamonix or other ski areas add travel, and evening options are narrower than in town. Road conditions around the Col des Montets may affect a driving plan, so rail and road information deserve separate checks. Do not assume guest-card train benefits extend to every bus journey. Choose a more central base if spontaneous dinners and several different mountain departures outweigh the attraction of a quieter village setting.
Chamonix municipality: the valleyServoz: a village stay with an onward ski journey

Servoz is a genuine accommodation village at the lower end of the valley, useful when you want a rural-feeling base and do not mind planning transport. It is better considered for a mixed regional stay than selected as though it were a hotel quarter immediately beneath Chamonix's lifts. Compare the actual building with the railway station and local services; accommodation in the village and a station-facing address can produce different luggage and morning routines.
For skiing, work backwards from the lift you intend to use and include the connection beyond the train or bus. Servoz does not provide a direct doorstep entrance to the principal Chamonix ski areas. Check operating days, the last return and guest-card eligibility without assuming that all public transport is included. A car or accommodation transfer may suit some properties better, but must be confirmed rather than invented. Pick Les Houches or central Chamonix instead when repeated ski starts need fewer moving parts.
Chamonix tourism: valley transportCheck the daily connection before booking
One valley, several ski areas
Choose the mountain area first, then confirm the pass and transport. Do not assume the principal ski areas are joined by continuous pistes.
Rail and bus rules differ
Check guest-card rail eligibility and current bus fares separately. A historic statement that all valley transport is free is not reliable planning.
Glacier routes are specialist terrain
The Vallee Blanche is not a groomed sightseeing descent. Use a qualified mountain guide and appropriate equipment for any glaciated itinerary.
Compare exact accommodation locations
Compare the property entrance, useful transport stop and mountain departure before comparing rooms. Confirm ski storage, lesson meeting points, luggage handling and any hotel transfer directly. A destination label, mountain view or nearby lift does not establish ski-in ski-out access, an included shuttle or suitability for every ability.
