Tbilisi city guide
Where to stay in Tbilisi
Seven Tbilisi bases compared by hills, river crossings, dining and transport: Kala, Sololaki, Abanotubani, Rustaveli, Avlabari, Chugureti and Vera.

Plan your visit
Tbilisi's river and hills make a small distance on a booking map misleading. Kala and Abanotubani put old-city landmarks close by; Sololaki adds residential architecture, Rustaveli museums, Avlabari left-bank access, and Chugureti or Vera a stronger neighbourhood dining focus. Choose the street and slope as carefully as the district.
Choose your base
For a first visit, start with lower Sololaki or Kala. Pick Abanotubani if bathhouses are a priority, Rustaveli for museums and avenue transport, or Avlabari for a left-bank metro base. Chugureti suits social stays around Marjanishvili and Fabrika; Vera favours cafes and a longer residential stay. Kala and Abanotubani are adjacent but offer different street settings, not two disconnected sightseeing centres.
Kala: old-city lanes and landmark walks

Kala is the historic right-bank core, with Anchiskhati on Shavteli Street, Sioni's surroundings and the lanes leading towards Meidani. It makes sense when you want to step out into older Tbilisi rather than commute to it. Restaurant and bar activity is concentrated around Shardeni and neighbouring lanes; the quieter northern streets by Anchiskhati give a different setting. The bathhouse district lies farther south, so a Kala address does not necessarily mean bathhouse roofs outside your window.
Liberty Square metro is useful for the northern or western edge, while the airport's published bus 337 corridor includes Baratashvili Street nearby. Use TTC's planner for the actual stop and direction: no metro entrance sits inside every old-town lane. The trade-off is uneven paving, hills towards the upper streets and late activity near bar clusters. Check luggage access before choosing a courtyard apartment. Sololaki is the alternative for a more regular street grid, and Rustaveli is better if museums and transport outweigh the old-city doorstep.
Plan it well: The map pin identifies Anchiskhati Basilica, not the boundary of Kala.
Georgia Travel: Anchiskhati in the historic districtSololaki: architectural streets with central convenience

Sololaki spreads west and south of Freedom Square through Leonidze, Machabeli, Asatiani and the streets climbing towards Chonkadze. Nineteenth- and early twentieth-century houses, decorated entrances and the Writers' House make the neighbourhood itself worth exploring. Cafes, wine bars and restaurants occupy the same street grid, so this is a useful compromise between old-city visits and a place to spend ordinary mornings. The photograph shows the Writers' House garden facade, not a representative hotel interior.
Lower Sololaki keeps Liberty Square metro and the central airport-bus corridor closer; higher addresses towards Amaghleba exchange that convenience for a hillier walk. Check TTC's stop map and the direction of bus 337, whose published outward and return routes differ around Freedom Square. The main downside is the building-by-building variation in old housing: stairs, courtyard access and room outlook deserve attention. Pick Rustaveli for simpler avenue orientation, or Kala if being among the oldest lanes is more important than Sololaki's architectural residential setting.
Plan it well: The map pin identifies Writers' House, not the boundary of Sololaki.
Georgia Travel: Sololaki district and its streetsAbanotubani: bathhouses and the southern old city

Abanotubani is the real sulfur-bath quarter below Narikala, with domed bathhouse roofs, Abano Street and the approach into the Legvtakhevi gorge. It is especially appealing when a bath session is part of the trip and you want that setting close to your accommodation. Restaurants around Meidani and the adjoining old-city streets provide meal options, while the southern location changes your daily starting point compared with a hotel near Freedom Square or the museum avenue.
There is no metro station in the bathhouse lanes. Use TTC's planner for nearby surface stops or assess the walk towards Liberty Square or Avlabari across the river; the latter includes a bridge and an uphill approach. Airport bus 337 is a corridor connection, not a service to each bathhouse door. The compromise is slope and narrow-street access, plus activity around a heavily visited landmark district. Sololaki is a better base for balanced citywide sightseeing, and Avlabari suits people who value a closer metro entrance more than bathhouse atmosphere.
Plan it well: The map pin identifies Abanotubani, not the boundary of Abanotubani.
Georgia Travel: sulfur bathsRustaveli and lower Mtatsminda: museums and avenue access

Rustaveli Avenue places the Simon Janashia Museum, National Gallery, Kashveti Church and the opera and theatre buildings on one clear urban axis. The lower Mtatsminda streets immediately above it add smaller cafes and residential lanes without abandoning the cultural corridor. Choose this base for repeated museum visits, performances or a stay where orientation matters more than wooden-balcony scenery. A room along the avenue and one high above it are different choices, even when both descriptions say Mtatsminda.
Liberty Square and Rustaveli metro stations serve opposite parts of the avenue, and the airport's published 337 route uses Rustaveli and Kostava streets. TTC's live planner is essential for the precise bus stop or a temporary diversion. The trade-off is traffic on the main road and an uphill return if you choose a hillside property; demonstrations can also affect the parliament stretch. Stay near the avenue if carrying luggage or avoiding slopes. Vera offers a more residential cafe base, while Kala puts the historic lanes directly around you.
Plan it well: The map pin identifies Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia, not the boundary of Rustaveli and lower Mtatsminda.
Georgia Travel: architectural tour of Rustaveli AvenueAvlabari: a left-bank metro base near Metekhi

Avlabari is the historic left-bank district above Metekhi, with its church viewpoint, Queen Darejan's palace and routes towards Rike Park. Sameba lies farther uphill and should not be treated as immediately next door to every Avlabari hotel. This base makes sense if you want the old city within reach but prefer to stay across the Mtkvari. Bakery and restaurant options belong to the streets around the metro and Ketevan Tsamebuli Avenue; crossing to Meidani adds another dining circuit.
Avlabari station gives access to TTC's first metro line, and the airport's 337 route uses the Queen Ketevan corridor. Compare the property with the actual stop and station entrance before assuming a straightforward luggage transfer. Riverfront addresses can be below the station level, and a cathedral-side address can be above it. The downside is the combination of slopes, road crossings and a bridge when visiting right-bank sights. Kala removes that bridge from an old-city day, while Rustaveli is more convenient for a museum-heavy itinerary.
Plan it well: The photograph shows Metekhi Church. The map pin identifies the historic Metekhi quarter, not the church entrance or Avlabari's boundary.
Georgia Travel: Metekhi Church in AvlabariChugureti: Marjanishvili streets and social evenings

Chugureti centres your stay on the left-bank streets around Marjanishvili and Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue. The avenue's historic facades, shops and cafes offer a different city experience from the fortress-side lanes. Fabrika on Ninoshvili Street adds a real cluster of bars, food venues, studios and a social courtyard, making this a useful choice for people who want evenings in their own neighbourhood. The photograph depicts Aghmashenebeli Avenue; Fabrika is a nearby venue, not the building shown.
Marjanishvili metro is the practical first-line reference. Airport bus 337 goes towards Station Square via Queen Tamara Avenue, so assess a connection to your actual Chugureti address instead of assuming it travels along the entire dining avenue. Use TTC for the final stop or metro leg. The trade-off is a separate journey or river crossing to Kala and the bathhouses, with venue noise around the busiest courtyards. Choose Kala for concentrated old-city sightseeing; choose a Chugureti side street if neighbourhood meals matter more than a landmark view.
Plan it well: The map pin identifies Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue, not the boundary of Chugureti.
Georgia Travel: Davit Aghmashenebeli AvenueVera: cafes and a residential stay above Rustaveli

Vera starts around the upper end of Rustaveli and extends along Melikishvili and the streets climbing above Kostava. Vera Park supplies a local green landmark, while cafes, bakeries and wine bars around Melikishvili and the Wine Factory No. 1 area make dining a reason to stay here. It is a residential alternative to old-city sightseeing streets, useful when you want several days of neighbourhood routines rather than one compressed landmark circuit. The park photo is an orientation image, not a claim about any property's view.
Rustaveli metro is the useful reference for lower Vera, and the published airport-bus route uses the Melikishvili or Kostava corridor according to direction. TTC's planner distinguishes the correct stop from a similar-looking address farther uphill. Vera's main compromise is the rising terrain and longer journey to the sulfur baths and southern old city. Check the full walk, not just proximity to the avenue. Choose lower Rustaveli for less climbing and repeated museum access; choose Chugureti for a left-bank social base around Marjanishvili instead.
Plan it well: The map pin identifies Vera Park, not the boundary of Vera.

Bus 337 is a city corridor, not an all-night guarantee
Tbilisi Airport lists municipal route 337 from the arrivals hall to the city and Station Square, using Queen Ketevan, Baratashvili and Rustaveli streets with directional differences through the centre. Check the current timetable and TTC stop before relying on a late arrival; arrange a road transfer when the operating window does not fit.
