Santorini city guide
Where to stay in Santorini
Compare three caldera settlements, the inland village of Pyrgos and two black-beach resorts, with real differences in sunset crowds, steps and bus connections.

Plan your visit
The most important Santorini choice is not simply which village looks prettiest. The caldera rim, stepped inland villages and eastern beaches offer different holidays. Fira makes bus-based exploring easier; Oia and Imerovigli put the cliff setting first. Kamari and Perissa favour beach days, while Pyrgos rewards travellers willing to plan around an inland, uphill base.
Choose your base
Fira is the most practical starting point for a varied trip using KTEL buses. Choose Oia for its preserved cliffside village and famous evening setting, Imerovigli for a view-led stay around Skaros, or Pyrgos for village lanes and inland touring. Kamari suits a concentrated beachfront resort routine; Perissa offers a longer southern beach setting. Neither beach resort is on the caldera.
Fira: a varied first visit using island buses

Fira is the useful compromise when a Santorini stay needs more than one view. The island capital combines the caldera edge with churches, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Megaro Gyzi cultural setting. Shops and dining give you choices between excursions rather than confining every evening to the hotel. A cliffside address and one near the road or bus station have very different access and outlooks, even though both are sold as Fira.
KTEL organises its published routes around departures and returns from Fira, including airport, Oia, Kamari and Perissa services. This makes the capital the clearest base for travellers relying on buses, but not a guarantee that connections align without waiting. Airport arrivals still need the walk or transfer from the stop to the property. Busy visitor streets and road traffic are the main compromise; accommodation below the rim can involve many steps. Choose Imerovigli for a more view-led retreat or Kamari if spending most days at a beach matters more than island-wide connections.
Plan it well: The Fira settlement pin is not the bus station or a hotel entrance; compare the final road-to-room route.
Municipality of Thira: FiraOia: cliffside village character and special-occasion stays

Oia suits travellers who want the settlement itself to be a central part of the holiday. The municipality highlights its preserved buildings, captains' houses, cave dwellings and maritime history, with the castle area and the paths towards Ammoudi adding recognisable settings. Dining is concentrated through the village, but a terrace overlooking the caldera is a specific property feature, not something that comes with every Oia room. Check what the advertised view actually faces.
KTEL publishes a Fira-Oia route. For an airport arrival using buses, plan the Fira connection instead of expecting an airport service directly to your doorstep. Cliffside lanes, steps and the descent to Ammoudi can make luggage and limited mobility more difficult than a road-accessible address. Sunset attracts concentrated visitor activity around the western viewpoints, a meaningful downside when you want space or an uncomplicated evening walk. Choose Fira for frequent cross-island outings, or Pyrgos if village architecture interests you more than being close to the well-known sunset gathering places.
Plan it well: Oia's settlement pin cannot establish a caldera view. Check the room's actual aspect and the steps from the drop-off.
Municipality of Thira: OiaImerovigli: a caldera-focused stay around Skaros

Imerovigli is a good choice when the main purpose is time beside the caldera rather than a long list of excursions. The settlement occupies a high part of the rim, with Skaros providing the distinctive foreground for walks and outlooks. The municipality also identifies Panagia Malteza among the village sights. Restaurants and hotel dining support an evening close to your room, but the village does not offer Fira's breadth of shops, museums and transport choices.
KTEL lists Imerovigli with Firostefani on a route from Fira; use the applicable timetable and the actual boarding point rather than assuming every passing bus serves the same stop. Airport bus arrivals therefore need the Fira connection or a planned road transfer. A cliff-facing room may be reached by stairs, and proximity to Skaros does not make its uneven walking route suitable for everybody. Choose Fira for repeated bus excursions and a larger evening choice, or Kamari if beach access and avoiding cliffside approaches matter more than the dramatic rim setting.
Plan it well: Imerovigli's village pin is not a promise of easy Skaros access; the rock walk and a hotel terrace are different experiences.
Municipality of Thira: ImerovigliPyrgos: inland village lanes and a touring base

Pyrgos is the inland option for travellers who want a historic village rather than a resort promenade. Its fortified upper settlement, small lanes, churches and galleries rise above the surrounding island landscape. The main square is a useful reference point for cafes and tavernas, while exploring farther uphill supplies the architectural interest. It is a base for enjoying the village and planning outings, not a substitute for a room directly on the caldera or the beach.
Road access and the exact final climb deserve attention: a property high in the old settlement may require carrying bags beyond the vehicle drop-off. KTEL includes Pyrgos in its published destination tariff, but that alone does not establish a dedicated route frequency or a direct airport connection. Confirm the current stopping service with the operator, or arrange your arrival transfer. The compromise is more transport planning and a stepped walk for beaches, Fira evenings and cliff viewpoints. Choose Fira when spontaneous bus outings are essential, or Imerovigli when the caldera view is the main reason for the stay.
Plan it well: The pin marks Pyrgos village. Confirm the drop-off and uphill luggage route for an upper-settlement property.
Municipality of Thira: PyrgosKamari: a beachfront resort routine with dining nearby

Kamari works when Santorini should feel like a beach holiday as well as a sightseeing trip. Its dark volcanic shore, parasols and concentration of beachfront places to eat give you a straightforward daily pattern: swim, return to the room and choose dinner along the resort frontage. Mesa Vouno defines the southern end, with Ancient Thera on the heights rather than on the beach. Check whether a property really fronts the shore or sits several streets inland.
KTEL publishes a Kamari-Fira service, making caldera visits possible without choosing a cliffside hotel. Its airport route is published separately from Fira; closeness on the map does not establish a direct Kamari airport bus. Compare the actual connection with a road transfer for your arrival. The downside is that sunsets over the caldera and most island museums are outings, not features outside your door, and beachfront activity may matter for light sleepers. Choose Fira for frequent sightseeing connections, or Imerovigli if the rim outlook outweighs swimming and a compact resort dining scene.
Plan it well: Kamari is the settlement anchor, not an airport-bus stop. Verify the current Fira connection or arrange a road transfer.
Municipality of Thira: KamariPerissa: long beach days on the southern coast

Perissa is a useful base when the dark beach and leisure facilities should occupy more of the holiday than the caldera villages. The municipality describes the organised beach, family facilities and water-sport choices; tavernas and other dining follow the resort streets and shore. Mesa Vouno provides a strong backdrop at the northern end. Although Kamari is on the other side of that mountain, the two are separate bases, not one continuous beachfront hotel district.
KTEL lists Perissa services from Fira, including express-labelled departures in the current table. Check the route relevant to your stop rather than assuming every service follows an identical stopping pattern. Airport arrivals using the published bus network connect through Fira or need a separate road transfer. The main compromise is repeated travel for Oia, caldera dinners and capital museums, with a different coastal outlook from the cliff settlements. Choose Kamari for its own concentrated resort frontage or Fira if several sightseeing outings will take priority over consecutive beach days. Neither beach base offers the caldera-facing outlook of Oia or Imerovigli.
Plan it well: The Perissa village pin does not establish beachfront access. Check the address and the stopping pattern of the selected bus.

Treat Fira as the published bus hub
KTEL's official destination selector specifies departures and returns from Fira for Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Imerovigli-Firostefani and the airport. Beach-to-village outings can therefore involve a change; confirm connections rather than treating map proximity as a direct route.
KTEL Santorini: official routes and destination selectorUse the current timetable, not remembered frequencies
The operator timetable checked for this guide was updated on 2 October 2026. It distinguishes airport, beach and northern-village services, and lists Pyrgos as a destination without establishing a dedicated frequency. Recheck the table for your travel season.
KTEL Santorini: current one-page timetableDistinguish Athinios from Fira's old port
The KTEL timetable identifies Athinios as the ferry-port destination. Give your transfer provider the arriving port and vessel details; a hotel overlooking Fira's old harbour is not beside the main ferry arrival. Confirm the relevant port departure with the operator.

Oia and Pyrgos have historic, compact village lanes, while the caldera villages descend steeply from the rim. Ask the property about the precise drop-off, steps and luggage assistance before selecting a cliffside or upper-village room.
