Where to stay in Vilnius

Compare the Old Town, Gediminas Avenue, artistic Uzupis, the station quarter, leafy Zverynas and contrasting Snipiskes, with airport-route and river-crossing trade-offs.

Plan your visit

Vilnius offers several genuinely different stay decisions within and around its centre. A courtyard address, a station-quarter base and a wooden-house neighbourhood produce different mornings and evenings. The Neris crossing and the walk from your airport bus are useful tests of whether the setting suits your itinerary.

Choose your base

Choose the Old Town for a first sightseeing visit, Gediminas Avenue for a broader central routine, or Uzupis for art and riverside lanes. Stotis suits rail and coach connections as well as nightlife; Zverynas puts wooden houses and park walks ahead of immediate monument access. Snipiskes makes sense for north-bank work or galleries, but its modern avenue and older residential streets are very different settings.

Old Town: a first visit centred on courtyards and churches

The Old Town is the simplest base when your days revolve around Pilies Street, the university courtyards and the route towards Town Hall Square and the Gates of Dawn. Around Stikliu and Gaono, the Glass Quarter adds galleries, craft shops and restaurant stops to the larger sightseeing circuit. Choose an address for the part you will use most: the Cathedral end favours the northern sights, while the southern end brings the station quarter closer. These are different daily walks within one substantial historic centre.

JUDU's airport information lists bus 88 through the city centre and buses 1 and 2 to the station area. Match the relevant stop and final walk to your address rather than assuming an airport bus serves the door of a courtyard hotel. Cobbles, narrow entrances and restaurant terraces can complicate luggage or a quiet night's sleep. Choose Gediminas Avenue for a broader street setting, or Stotis when an early onward departure matters more than being surrounded by the historic core.

Plan it well: The photograph and pin identify Vilnius University's old campus, within the Old Town; they are not a Glass Quarter location.

Gediminas Avenue and Lukiskes: shopping, cultural venues and a central city routine

Gediminas Avenue joins Cathedral Square to the Parliament end of the centre, with shops, restaurants and cultural venues along a much broader axis than the Old Town lanes. Staying near Lukiskes Square puts the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights in your local circuit; the former prison's cultural programme is another reason to investigate this end of town. The museum is a serious memorial visit, not an entertainment recommendation. This base suits travellers who want historic sightseeing alongside shopping and a more contemporary urban setting.

Use JUDU's journey planner for the relevant end of the avenue, including the connections around Vinco Kudirkos Square. Its airport information distinguishes the 3G city-centre corridor from the 88 route, so check which actually suits your street. The long avenue is not one compact hotel zone: a Parliament-side address leaves a longer approach to the Gates of Dawn than a Cathedral-side one. Road traffic and evening restaurants also vary by block. Choose the Old Town for continuous historic lanes, or Zverynas when greenery takes precedence over central shopping.

Plan it well: The photograph and map pin show the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights on Gediminas Avenue, near Lukiskes Square.

Uzupis: art spaces and riverside neighbourhood walks

Uzupis sits across the Vilnele from the Old Town, with the bridges, artists' spaces and streets around the Angel of Uzupis giving it an identifiable neighbourhood focus. Uzupio and Polocko streets offer cafes and places to pause between the art incubator and the district's playful republic references. Bernardine Garden and the St Anne church area are outings on the other side of the river, not attractions to mislabel as inside Uzupis. Choose this base when wandering, galleries and smaller streets are as important as the major monuments.

For arrival, JUDU's airport buses serve the centre or station rather than providing a named direct Uzupis airport connection. Compare an onward bus or a walk from the right central stop with your exact street. The district rises away from the river, so a nearby-looking address can involve a slope and luggage over uneven paving. The lower cafe streets also attract visitors rather than guaranteeing seclusion. Choose the Old Town for the most continuous first-visit circuit, or Gediminas Avenue when transport access and shopping are the stronger priorities.

Plan it well: The image depicts Uzupis; the district pin is an orientation point, not the entrance to a specific gallery.

Stotis: rail connections, market food and nightlife

Stotis is the station quarter around Vilnius's rail and coach terminals, but it is more than a place to wait for a departure. Hales Market provides food stalls and eating stops, while street art, cafes and venues such as Peronas and Kablys give the area an evening identity. The southern Old Town is a separate walk north rather than a different city altogether. Choose this base for a trip that combines onward travel with market mornings or the quarter's nightlife, not just for a station icon on the map.

JUDU's current airport information lists bus 1 to the station and bus 2 to the bus station, which makes this a clearly defined arrival choice. Check the current boarding point and the property entrance rather than using an older photograph of the forecourt as directions. Railway activity, busy roads and nearby music venues make the exact room position important; the Cathedral and northern museums are farther from this base than from Gediminas Avenue. Choose the Old Town when historic surroundings matter most, or Zverynas if evening venues are not part of your plans.

Plan it well: The photograph shows Vilnius railway station in 2009; the pin identifies the station, not the boundaries of Stotis or today's bus boarding layout.

Zverynas: wooden houses, river walks and park time

Zverynas offers a different daily rhythm from the Old Town: wooden villas, residential streets and the Neris are the reasons to stay, not merely scenery seen from a passing vehicle. The Kenesa adds a distinctive architectural stop, and the pedestrian bridge gives access to Vingis Park's trails on the opposite bank. Neighbourhood cafes suit a morning spent walking before a central museum visit. This base works particularly well when you want park time or several days of residential surroundings rather than a short, monument-heavy city break.

JUDU's bus and trolleybus planner is the useful arrival tool here: compare the street around your accommodation and the connection across the river, rather than assuming the whole district has one transport stop. The airport's published central routes still leave an onward connection for many Zverynas addresses. Central dinners and Old Town sightseeing take more deliberate journeys, and the district has fewer concentrated evening venues than Stotis. Choose Gediminas Avenue if greenery is an occasional outing; choose Zverynas when the wooden streets and Vingis Park are part of the stay itself.

Plan it well: The aerial photograph depicts Zverynas; the Wikidata district point is not a hotel entrance or the Vingis Park footbridge.

Snipiskes: north-bank work and contrasts beyond the Old Town

Snipiskes is not a uniform skyscraper quarter. Around Konstitucijos Avenue and Europa Square, the north bank offers modern offices, shopping and places to eat; farther into the district, wooden houses and the Kalvariju Market preserve another urban scale. The National Gallery of Art and the White Bridge riverfront add reasons to stay beyond a business appointment. Go Vilnius's official walking route makes this contrast explicit, so compare the hotel's street rather than treating every Snipiskes address as the same modern setting.

JUDU lists airport bus 88 on the Airport-Centre-Europa Square route, giving a meaningful arrival connection for the southern business-district end. That is not a door-to-door promise for properties farther north: use the planner for the final walk or onward service. The river crossing separates you from much of the Old Town circuit, and broad roads around Konstitucijos feel different from intimate historic lanes. Choose this base for work, north-bank galleries or its neighbourhood contrast; choose Gediminas Avenue for central leisure with fewer repeated bridge crossings.

Plan it well: The Wikidata pin identifies the Snipiskes district, not Europa Square or a specific office building.

Match the airport route to your Vilnius base

Centre, station and north bank are different arrivals

JUDU lists 1 and 2 for the station area, 3G through the centre and 88 through the centre to Europa Square. Select the route by your accommodation's actual stop, not simply by the word centre.

Check the last part of the journey

Use JUDU's dated journey planner for the walk or transfer from the airport bus. This matters particularly for upper Uzupis, residential Zverynas and Snipiskes properties beyond Europa Square.

Station-quarter evenings

Go Vilnius's station-district guide distinguishes food markets and creative venues from the transport terminals. Check the current programme at the venue you intend to visit, and the room's position if late music would spoil your stay.

Old Town campus and courtyards

The university's historic campus is on Universiteto Street. It is a useful landmark for the northern Old Town, not evidence that an accommodation listing is beside every church or within the Glass Quarter.
