Where to stay in Riga

Compare Riga's Old Town, boulevard centre, Art Nouveau streets, transport hub and two distinct left-bank bases, with river-crossing and airport-bus trade-offs.

Plan your visit

Riga's stay decision is more specific than Old Town versus everywhere else. The canal-side boulevards and Art Nouveau streets offer two different central routines, while the Daugava separates sightseeing-heavy stays from neighbourhood time on the left bank. Choose the streets you want to return to after dinner, then check how your arrival fits.

Choose your base

Choose Vecriga for a short sightseeing trip, the central boulevards for a mix of parks and everyday city streets, or the Quiet Centre for Art Nouveau architecture. The station and market end makes onward travel simpler. Across the Daugava, Agenskalns offers market-led neighbourhood life, while Kipsala offers river walks and wooden houses. Neither left-bank choice is a substitute for sleeping among the Old Town sights.

Old Town (Vecriga): a first visit among the historic sights

Vecriga puts Riga Cathedral, St Peter's Church and the House of the Blackheads in the same daily walking circuit. Streets around Dome Square and Livu Square offer cafe terraces, restaurants and bars; the riverside edge provides a different outlook from the narrow lanes inland. This is the clearest choice for a short visit when you want to spend the day among merchant houses and churches, return to your room, then go out again without making another cross-city journey.

Rigas satiksme services stop around the perimeter rather than at every hotel door. Airport bus 22 reaches 11. novembra krastmala on the inbound route; the airport lists Grecinieku Street for the return direction, so do not assume the same stop works both ways. Cobblestones complicate wheeled luggage, and evening activity around the squares can make a street-facing room a poor fit for light sleepers. Choose the Quiet Centre for architecture without making the busiest entertainment lanes your nightly base.

Plan it well: The photograph and pin identify the House of the Blackheads, a landmark within Vecriga, not the whole Old Town.

Central boulevards and Centrs: parks, shopping and a broader city routine

Look beyond the canal towards the Freedom Monument, Esplanade and the streets around Terbatas and Brivibas if you want both historic sightseeing and a functioning city neighbourhood. The boulevard parks soften the transition from Vecriga; farther into Centrs, shops, cafes and bars replace the continuous medieval backdrop. Bergs Bazaar adds a courtyard dining stop east of the main boulevard circuit. This base suits a longer weekend with museum visits, shopping and evenings that are not all spent in the Old Town.

Centrs is a large municipal neighbourhood, so a hotel advertised as central may sit well beyond the canal. Use Rigas satiksme's planner for the actual address and its nearby bus, tram or trolleybus stops; airport bus 22 serves the station and Old Town edge, not every part of Centrs. Brivibas and other through streets carry traffic, and lively bars are not confined to Vecriga. Choose a canal-side address for easy sightseeing, or the station area when luggage and an onward departure outweigh neighbourhood atmosphere.

Plan it well: The Freedom Monument photograph and pin show the boulevard edge of Centrs, not the location of every central hotel.

Quiet Centre: Art Nouveau walks and restaurant-led evenings

The Quiet Centre is the useful name for the Art Nouveau streets around Alberta, Elizabetes and Strelnieku, rather than a promise about sound levels. Staying here gives you repeated chances to look at the facades instead of squeezing the architecture into one excursion. The Riga Art Nouveau Centre on Alberta Street supplies indoor context, while Kronvalda Park offers a green route towards the canal. Restaurants, wine bars and cafes give this part of the centre its own evening options without relying on the Old Town squares.

Rigas satiksme buses and trolleybuses on the surrounding larger streets are the practical connections to compare with the property's entrance. An airport arrival on bus 22 still needs a final walk or onward connection from its central stops. This is a less convenient base for an early intercity departure than the station area, and the medieval sights remain a separate walk south. Choose Vecriga when churches and historic lanes are the priority; choose this area when the facades and nearby dining are part of each day's plan.

Plan it well: The image and map anchor are Alberta Street itself, one of the Quiet Centre's principal architecture streets.

Central Station and Central Market: onward journeys and food-market mornings

The area between Riga Central Station, the bus station and Central Market is a practical base for travellers continuing by rail or intercity coach. The market halls provide a real food destination, with stalls and eating options rather than just a transport interchange nearby. The Spikeri warehouse quarter extends the outing towards the river, while the Old Town lies across the busy streets on the other side of the bus station. Staying here makes sense when arrival and departure logistics are a substantial part of the trip.

Rigas satiksme's airport bus 22 uses Autoosta and Centraltirgus on the inbound route; the airport lists Centrala stacija and 13. janvara Street for the outbound direction. Check the right stop for your journey and the correct station entrance. Road crossings, station activity and the working market create a busier setting than the park-side boulevards. Choose Vecriga for a more continuous historic backdrop, or the Quiet Centre if your trip is mainly architecture and unhurried dinners rather than onward transport.

Plan it well: The image and pin identify Central Market, beside the transport-hub area; they do not depict the railway station.

Agenskalns: market food and left-bank neighbourhood life

Agenskalns gives a stay on the Daugava's left bank a strong everyday focus: the restored market hall on Nometnu Street combines producers downstairs with a food court above. It is a useful base for travellers who would rather make breakfast and lunch part of neighbourhood exploration than start every morning among tour groups. Wooden houses and the Kalnciema Quarter add a different architectural layer, although the latter is a separate walk from the market and its events are date-dependent.

Use Rigas satiksme's planner around Agenskalna tirgus and your actual hotel street for the journey over the river. Airport bus 22 crosses the left bank, but its inbound and outbound itineraries differ; Nometnu Street appears on the airport's outbound list, not as a blanket airport stop for the whole district. The trade-off is repeated bridge journeys for Old Town sightseeing and less convenience for a very short central itinerary. Choose this base for the market and residential streets themselves, not simply because a listing calls it close to the centre.

Plan it well: The photograph and map pin show Agenskalns Market on Nometnu Street, a specific neighbourhood anchor.

Kipsala: riverfront walks and wooden-house architecture

Kipsala is an island base, not another name for the entire left bank. Balasta dambis brings wooden houses and a riverside perspective on central Riga, while the Zanis Lipke Memorial gives a nearby visit historical substance. The official tourism guide also identifies river-view dining at Fabrika. This is a good choice when the river setting, architecture and time outside the Old Town lanes are reasons for the trip, rather than extras squeezed between central museum visits.

Connections to the centre depend on the Vansu Bridge approach and the property's position on the island. Compare the Kipsala stop and onward walk in Rigas satiksme's planner instead of treating a waterfront address as a central interchange. Airport bus 22 is not a direct island service; its left-bank route still leaves a separate final connection. The river view comes with a bridge journey whenever you want the main Old Town circuit, and dining choices are more dispersed than in Vecriga. Choose Agenskalns for a market-led neighbourhood, or the central boulevards for simpler access to several city districts.

Plan it well: The photograph shows Balasta dambis; the Wikidata pin identifies Kipsala island rather than a specific restaurant or hotel.

Plan Riga's river crossing and airport stops

Airport bus 22 changes stops by direction

RIX's current route list places 11. novembra krastmala, Autoosta and Centraltirgus on the inbound journey, and Centrala stacija, 13. janvara Street and Grecinieku Street on the airport-bound journey. Follow the airport signs to the P1 bus stop, then check the stop needed for the return trip.

Use the operator's dated journey plan

Rigas satiksme operates Riga's buses, trams and trolleybuses. Look up your hotel street and travel date, particularly for a left-bank stay or a late arrival, rather than using an old route-map screenshot as a timetable.

Find a Riga hotel on the right side of your itinerary

Compare Riga hotels on Roomundo against your daily route: the Old Town circuit, the station, an Art Nouveau street or a left-bank market. A river crossing and the correct airport-bus direction matter more than a broad central label.
