Podgorica city guide
Where to stay in Podgorica
Compare Podgorica's cafe-filled centre, Ottoman quarter, Gorica foothill and two west-bank bases, with honest river-crossing and airport-arrival trade-offs.

Plan your visit
Podgorica's most useful stay comparison is between the central grid, the Ottoman quarter, the park-facing north and the modern streets west of the Moraca. River crossings and the precise hotel address matter more than a loose 'city centre' label. These five bases keep the decision on the city's own scale.
Choose your base
Nova Varos is the easiest starting point for a short cafe-and-sights stay. Stara Varos adds Ottoman streets; the Gorica foothill adds park walks. Choose Preko Morace for the cathedral and modern residential streets, or Krusevac for the palace park and a west-bank base. These are five city neighbourhood choices, not five separate old towns.
Nova Varos: the simplest first-visit base

Look around Independence Square, Hercegovacka Street and Njegoseva Street if you want Podgorica's everyday centre outside your door. This is the planned street grid and cafe district rather than the surviving Ottoman quarter. Tables along the central streets make it a useful base for meals between the square, the theatre and a walk towards the Moraca bridges. Stara Varos lies across the Ribnica, so choosing here does not mean giving up the older sights.
Putevi's city-bus information provides the route network and a linked stop map; use the actual nearest stop rather than treating Independence Square as a bus terminal. Airport buses listed by Airports of Montenegro arrive at the Central Bus Station, southeast of this neighbourhood, leaving a separate final connection. The main compromise is street activity: a room above a cafe or facing a busy avenue differs from one inside a courtyard. Choose the Gorica edge if trees matter more than having central dining immediately downstairs.
Plan it well: The map pin identifies Independence Square, Podgorica, not the boundary of Nova Varos.

Stara Varos is the genuine Ottoman-era quarter, centred on the Clock Tower at Becir-beg Osmanagic Square. Its smaller lanes, mosques and low buildings offer a different setting from Nova Varos's straight streets. The tourism organisation specifically identifies traditional restaurants and cafes here, so this is a sensible choice when local food and the older townscape interest you more than shopping in a modern district. The Ribnica confluence and Skaline make a natural northern edge to your walks.
Kralja Nikole and the roads around the quarter are more useful transport references than the narrow interior lanes. Check Putevi's stop map for your exact address, and distinguish the Central Bus Station from a local roadside stop when arriving from the airport. The trade-off is that the historic quarter is small and does not contain all the city's evening options. Narrow streets can also complicate a car drop-off or luggage transfer. Nova Varos is the better alternative for travellers who want a wider central dining circuit without crossing the river.

Choose the streets below Gorica Hill if a walk among trees is part of your daily routine. The hill's paths, Saint George's Church at its foot and the nearby city stadium give this northern edge of the centre a clear identity. Look for accommodation on the town-facing side rather than assuming every address containing Gorica is equally central: Donja Gorica is a different neighbourhood. Meals and cafes remain concentrated along the streets leading back towards Nova Varos, not on the wooded hill itself.
The stadium and Bulevar Ivana Crnojevica are useful references when checking Putevi's bus-stop map. Airport arrival still needs a final connection from the Central Bus Station or a road transfer to the property; the park is not an airport transport hub. The cost of a greener setting is the extra walk to Stara Varos and west-bank sights, with gradients if you choose a hillside address. Stay in Nova Varos instead if you prefer level central streets and repeated short returns to your room between stops.
Plan it well: The photograph shows the hill and city view. The pin marks Gorica Hill, not a hotel entrance or an accessible park route.

Preko Morace means the city across the Moraca from the older centre. Around the Resurrection Cathedral and George Washington Boulevard, the scale changes to broad streets and residential blocks with shops and places to eat. It suits visitors who want the cathedral, contemporary Podgorica and practical neighbourhood services rather than an old-town setting. The cathedral is a useful orientation landmark, but the wider district is substantial: an address near it is not interchangeable with one much farther west.
Use Putevi's route and stop map to compare the property with the cathedral-side avenues and your preferred river crossing. Moscow Bridge is a pedestrian connection, while other crossings carry road traffic as well; check which one your actual walk uses. Airport transfers approach by road or require a connection after the Central Bus Station. The main downside is repeatedly crossing the Moraca for Nova Varos cafes and Stara Varos sights. Choose the east-bank centre if those dominate your plans; choose Krusevac if the palace park is your west-bank priority.
Plan it well: The map pin identifies Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, not the boundary of Preko Morace.
Podgorica Tourism: Resurrection CathedralKrusevac: palace gardens and a slower west-bank stay

Krusevac puts the former Petrovic royal residence and its park at the centre of your stay. The Museum of Contemporary Art's palace association makes this a useful base for an exhibition-led visit, while the surrounding trees supply a different daily setting from Podgorica's paved central squares. Look around the park and Bulevar Svetog Petra Cetinjskog, with dining and shops on the surrounding urban streets. This is a lived-in west-bank neighbourhood, not an isolated country palace or a second historic centre.
Putevi's stop map helps identify the appropriate boulevard stop and connection towards the centre; a property description saying 'near the park' does not establish its bus access. Airport travel is a road transfer or a separate connection from the Central Bus Station. The compromise is distance from the compact Nova Varos and Stara Varos sightseeing pair, and exhibitions have their own opening arrangements. Pick this area when park time and art are deliberate priorities. For a one-night visit focused on the Clock Tower and central cafes, Nova Varos uses your limited walking time better.

Airport buses terminate away from the central square
Airports of Montenegro lists buses between the airport terminal and Podgorica Central Bus Station, operated by BTC Zeta, MS Tours and Zejdin. Its linked timetable states validity only to May 2025: confirm a departure with the operator before relying on it. A taxi or arranged transfer is the alternative for an arrival that does not fit an operating bus.
Airports of Montenegro: parking and transportationUse Putevi's current network, not an old route list
The operator publishes current city-bus routes and links a stop map. Compare the actual address, direction of travel and river crossing; there is no metro, and an airport bus is a separate service from an ordinary neighbourhood bus.

Compare hotels around your chosen neighbourhood, then check the property against its street and transport stop. For a short first stay, begin with Nova Varos; for a longer visit, the west-bank districts make more sense when the cathedral, palace or local appointments are central to your plans.
