Valletta city guide
Where to stay in Valletta
Compare two useful Valletta bases with nearby Floriana, Sliema and Birgu, weighing historic evenings, gardens, seafront walks and the real ferry or bus approach.

Plan your visit
Valletta is a compact peninsula, so inventing a long list of quarters would not help you choose a hotel. The useful decisions are the central ridge versus the northern streets, or a genuinely different base just outside or across the harbour. Floriana favours gardens and bus access, Sliema favours coastal routines, and Birgu favours smaller historic streets. The latter three are separate towns; each changes your arrival and the journey home after an evening in the capital.
Choose your base
Stay in central Valletta for a first visit and easy returns between sights. Northern Valletta suits theatre evenings and the Marsamxett side, with a longer walk from City Gate. Floriana works for the terminal and gardens; Sliema works for seafront routines; Birgu works for harbour heritage.
Ferry-side does not mean step-free. Valletta's two harbours have different landings, and routes between waterfront and upper streets can involve climbs. Compare the last walk as carefully as the crossing.
Central Valletta: a first visit and evenings inside the walls

Choose the streets around Republic Street, Merchants Street and St John's Co-Cathedral for the clearest Valletta-first stay. The archaeology museum, palace squares and Upper Barrakka Gardens can form a varied day without leaving the peninsula. Cafes, restaurant streets and the rebuilt market setting add useful breaks between historic interiors. This is the strongest choice when you want to return to your room before dinner and keep walking through the capital after day visitors have gone, rather than begin every morning with a crossing.
Malta Public Transport's main Valletta terminal is outside City Gate, and the airport TD4 service gives you a useful arrival reference. Your hotel may still involve a walk along pedestrian streets, stairs or a descent away from the central ridge. The tradeoff is a busy sightseeing and dining setting, plus historic buildings whose access varies: check the actual lift and entrance. Floriana is better for prioritising the terminal and gardens; Sliema is better when a seafront promenade and a broader resort-style hotel setting matter more than the cathedral doorstep.
Plan it well: St John's Co-Cathedral is the photographed and mapped anchor, not a hotel entrance. Central streets and harbour steps are different luggage routes.
St John's Co-Cathedral: visitor locationNorthern Valletta: theatre evenings and a Marsamxett-side stay

The northern part of Valletta is a useful alternative within the same real, compact city, not a separate resort district. Around Old Theatre Street, St Paul's Pro-Cathedral and the Manoel Theatre, the balance shifts towards smaller streets and cultural evenings, with Republic Street continuing towards Casa Rocca Piccola and Fort St Elmo. Restaurants and bars remain within the city grid, but you are farther from the bus terminal than near City Gate. Choose it when the theatre or the Marsamxett side is part of the appeal.
The Sliema ferry uses the Marsamxett side, below the upper streets, so proximity on a map does not remove the climb from the landing. An airport TD4 arrival at the Valletta terminal leaves a longer peninsula walk or an onward arrangement with the hotel. The downside is exactly that extra last leg with bags, and the possibility of evening activity near restaurant streets. Central Valletta is the simpler first-visit compromise; Floriana works better for repeated bus departures. Ask for the actual access route rather than assuming all waterfront approaches are level.
Plan it well: The pin and photo show St Paul's Pro-Cathedral in northern Valletta, not the Sliema ferry landing.
St Paul's Pro-Cathedral: location and visitsFloriana: garden walks and access to Valletta buses

Floriana is the adjoining town outside Valletta's walls, useful when you want the capital close by without a room deep in its pedestrian grid. St Publius Church and the Granaries provide the civic centre, while the Mall and the area's bastion gardens add walks that feel quite different from Republic Street. Cafes and local streets around the church make a sensible everyday base, and the walk towards Triton Fountain and City Gate gives you a clear approach into Valletta for the main sights.
For transport, compare the property with the Valletta terminal and Floriana stops such as Bombi, not just a distance from the city wall. Malta Public Transport lists Floriana on the TD4 airport route, but boarding locations and direction matter; the stop used on the way out need not be the right arrival stop. Main roads and events at the Granaries can make parts of the town busy, so a garden-side address is not automatically silent. Choose central Valletta for historic-city evenings, or Birgu if harbour heritage is more important than the bus interchange.
Plan it well: The pin and photograph mark St Publius Parish Church in Floriana. The bus terminal and Bombi are separate transport points.
Floriana Local Council: town and garden walksSliema: seafront evenings and a longer harbour-area stay

Sliema is a separate coastal town across Marsamxett Harbour, worth choosing when the promenade, shopping and a wide selection of restaurant streets are daily priorities. The harbour side around the Ferries gives you the Valletta-facing connection; the seafront towards Tower Road offers a different walking setting. These are not identical hotel locations, so decide whether a morning crossing or an evening promenade matters more. Sliema suits a longer stay mixing visits to the capital with time along the coast rather than a weekend devoted entirely to Valletta's interiors.
Valletta Ferry Services operates the crossing, and Malta Public Transport's TD3 airport route serves Sliema; check the specific bus stop near your property. The compromise is leaving the capital each evening and relying on either a ferry or a road journey to return. Ferries have seasonal schedules and service-status notices, not an unconditional all-night connection, while the seafront road brings traffic. Stay inside Valletta when walking home from dinner is decisive, or in Floriana when access to the capital's bus terminal outweighs the coastal setting.
Plan it well: The pin is Sliema's town anchor, not its ferry pier. The photo genuinely shows the Sliema waterfront at night.
Malta Tourism Authority: SliemaBirgu (Vittoriosa): harbour history and smaller old-town streets

Birgu is the heritage-led alternative across the Grand Harbour, one of the Three Cities rather than a Valletta neighbourhood. Fort St Angelo, the Inquisitor's Palace and the narrow Collachio streets make a substantial local day before you cross to the capital. The marina waterfront offers a different dining setting from Valletta's central ridge, with boats and fortifications shaping the view. Choose Birgu when those streets and harbour evenings are part of the trip itself, not solely because a hotel photograph includes Valletta across the water.
Check the walk to the Three Cities ferry landing on the Bormla side; the service is not a door-to-door boat from every Birgu property. Malta Public Transport also operates route 2 between Valletta and Birgu Centre, which is useful to compare for an airport connection via the capital. The tradeoff is an extra journey whenever you want Valletta, and historic lanes that can complicate luggage access. Central Valletta suits a brief monument-heavy visit; Sliema suits a stay prioritising the long seafront promenade over small old-town streets.
Plan it well: Fort St Angelo is the landmark pin and photo subject in Birgu. The photograph was taken across the harbour from Valletta; the ferry landing is elsewhere.

Use TD4 for a Valletta airport arrival
Malta Public Transport lists TD4 between the airport and Valletta, with Lascaris and Floriana stops on the published route. Check direction and stop details; a Floriana stop on the return leg is not proof of the same inbound drop-off.
Malta Public Transport: TD4Check TD3 for Sliema
The TD3 airport service covers Sliema and includes named stops such as Torri, Chalet and Ferries on the published itinerary. Match the direction and nearest stop to your hotel rather than assume every coastal property has a doorstep airport bus.
Malta Public Transport: TD3Choose the correct harbour crossing
Valletta Ferry Services publishes separate Sliema and Three Cities services, seasonal timetables and operating-status notices. Check the final return sailing and the walking route from the landing; retain a road-transport alternative for service disruption.
Valletta Ferry Services: schedules and statusBirgu also has a road connection
Route 2 links Valletta with Birgu Centre. Compare it with the Three Cities ferry for your address and arrival time, especially when you have luggage or a flight outside the convenient ferry connections.
