Bratislava city guide
Where to stay in Bratislava
Compare pedestrian Old Town, the castle slopes, western Ruzinov around Nivy and Mileticova, park-side Petrzalka and riverside Devin for distinctly different stays.

Plan your visit
Bratislava's historic core is compact, but a hotel described as central can sit on a hill, across the Danube or beside a coach hub east of the lanes. The most useful choice is between walking-first sightseeing, everyday district life and a deliberately outlying river stay. Identify the bank, slope and actual stop before treating a city-centre label as an arrival plan.
Choose your base
Old Town fits a short first visit with meals and monuments on foot. Castle Hill and Palisady suit an elevated residential setting with a climb. Western Ruzinov, especially the Nivy/Mileticova side, favours coach connections and markets. Northern Petrzalka puts parks and river walks across the bridge from the core. Devin is a real outlying village district for a castle-and-river stay, not another central neighbourhood.
Old Town: a walking-first city break

The pedestrian centre around Hlavne namestie, Michael's Gate and the Primate's Palace is the obvious base for a short visit focused on historic Bratislava. Laurinska and the lanes towards Hviezdoslavovo namestie supply cafes and restaurants, while Saint Martin's Cathedral and the Danube embankment create natural extensions to a walk. Stay here when you want to return between visits and make the evening meal part of the same compact route, rather than organise each day around public transport.
The main railway station is north of the medieval lanes, and airport bus 61 runs to that station, not through the pedestrian core. Use DPB's connections for the final leg and check where a vehicle can reach your accommodation. Paving, historic-building stairs and busy terraces are the practical drawbacks; a central room may face more evening activity than expected. Choose the castle slopes for a different residential setting, or Nivy-side Ruzinov when coach arrivals and district meals take priority.
Plan it well: The pin marks Hlavne namestie, not the whole administrative borough of Stare Mesto.
Visit Bratislava: Old Town Hall and historic centreCastle Hill and Palisady: castle views and hillside streets

The castle slopes and nearby Palisady streets offer a different daily setting from the pedestrian lanes below. Bratislava Castle and its grounds become the obvious local outing, while Zamocka connects the hill with the western edge of Old Town. Choose this base if you like an elevated residential approach and do not mind using the descent into the centre for many meals. Small cafes along the approach streets supplement the larger choice below; a hillside address is not a promise of a castle-view room.
DPB's map identifies stops such as Hrad and Zamocka, but their convenience depends on which side of the slopes your accommodation occupies. Airport bus 61 arrives at the main station, requiring a connecting service or road transfer. The meaningful drawback is repeated gradients, sometimes with steps on the most direct walking route. Travellers with heavy luggage or a wish to avoid climbing should favour Old Town's lower streets or park-side Petrzalka instead.
Plan it well: The castle is the landmark pin and photograph; Palisady accommodation may be on a different slope.
Visit Bratislava: Bratislava CastleWestern Ruzinov and Nivy: markets and coach connections

The Nivy side of western Ruzinov makes sense for travellers whose stay includes coach journeys, longer visits or everyday neighbourhood meals. Nivy's bus station and shops are a practical hub, while Mileticova Market farther east offers produce stalls and simple food counters rather than a formal old-town restaurant street. Dulovo namestie and the surrounding residential roads add places to stop locally. Check which part you are booking: a hotel by Nivy and one near the market are not beside the same entrance.
DPB's buses and trolleybuses connect this area through named stops including Autobusova stanica and the Mileticova corridor. Airport bus 61 passes farther north through the city's eastern approaches, so a Ruzinov address does not automatically mean a direct airport bus. Road crossings, commercial traffic and distance from the medieval core are the trade-off for useful district facilities. Choose Old Town for monuments outside the door, or Devin when the intention is to leave the urban setting entirely.
Plan it well: The market is the photo and map anchor in western Ruzinov, not the Nivy coach terminal.
Visit Bratislava: Mileticova MarketNorthern Petrzalka: park and river time near the bridges

The northern edge of Petrzalka, around Sad Janka Krala and the Danube, is useful for travellers who want lawns, river walks and space between sightseeing visits. The park sits between the bridges, with Aupark supplying shopping and indoor meal options and the Tyrsovo embankment offering a different seasonal outdoor scene. This is a specific park-side base, not a claim that the whole large residential district is equally close to Old Town. Compare the actual bridge approach and the room's side of the main roads.
DPB's tram corridor across Stary most and stops around Sad Janka Krala help connect this bank with the centre; check the current network for your particular address. Petrzalka railway station lies farther into the district, and airport bus 61 is on the other bank, so both require an explicit connection. The compromise is crossing the river for most historic sights and dinners. Old Town is simpler for a walking-only weekend; the castle slopes offer elevated character without changing banks.
Plan it well: The park pin and photo identify northern Petrzalka, not its distant railway station.

Devin is an outlying village district beneath the castle at the meeting of the Danube and Morava. It earns a place as a specialist base for travellers who want river walks, cycling and castle time to shape the stay. The village streets and small dining stops offer a different rhythm from the capital's pedestrian centre. Look for accommodation in the village itself rather than confusing Devin with Devinska Nova Ves, a separate district farther along the river landscape.
Visit Bratislava identifies bus 29 from Most SNP to Devin, and DPB's current map includes Hrad Devin. That link makes central visits possible but does not turn an outlying stay into a central one. Airport bus 61 needs a cross-city connection or a separately arranged transfer. The trade-offs are fewer accommodation and dinner choices, dependence on the return timetable and a journey for most city museums. Choose Old Town for a first short break, or northern Petrzalka for river space with the historic core closer.
Plan it well: The pin marks Devin Castle above the village, not a hotel entrance or Devinska Nova Ves.
Visit Bratislava: Devin Castle and accessThree arrival hubs, different final journeys
Bratislava airport serves the station, not every base
The airport identifies bus 61 to Hlavna stanica and separately lists N61. Match the timetable to your arrival and arrange the connecting leg for the Old Town, hill, southern bank or Devin.

DPB's network map reviewed for this guide is dated 3 October 2026. It distinguishes the castle stops, Nivy coach terminal, Petrzalka crossings and Devin's route. Consult the linked map index again for subsequent changes.
DPB: current network mapsA rail-station label needs a station name
Hlavna stanica and Petrzalka station are not interchangeable. Decide which station your train uses before prioritising accommodation described as near the railway.
DPB: network map dated 3 October 2026Treat Devin as a deliberate outlying stay
Bus 29 is the documented city connection; river cruises have their own operating programme. Plan a return service before arranging a city dinner or an onward departure.
Visit Bratislava: Devin accessCompare Bratislava hotels by bank, slope and hub
Compare hotels in Bratislava against the route you will use most. For Old Town and Castle Hill, inspect paving, steps and the final vehicle drop-off. In Ruzinov, decide whether Nivy or Mileticova is the real priority. For Petrzalka, check the bridge and station separately; choose Devin only when the castle-and-river setting justifies the city journey.
