Phuket city guide
Where to stay in Phuket
Choose between Old Town food and heritage, Patong nightlife, distinct west-coast beach bases and the southern Rawai/Nai Harn area, with an airport-side Nai Yang option.

Plan your visit
A Phuket Town hotel and a Phuket beach resort can lead to completely different holidays. The island's roads connect the choices, but they do not turn every beach and dinner into a walk from every hotel. Decide first whether you want heritage streets, nightlife, a compact beach-town catchment or a resort-centered stay. Then locate the actual building: a hill, a different bay or a long resort approach can matter more than the name used in a booking. Airport transport is also divided between the town route and the west-coast corridor, rather than one service conveniently covering all eight bases.
Choose your base
Old Town favors food and heritage; Patong favors entertainment and busy beach-town services. Kata offers a smaller-bay stay, while Karon spreads hotels along a longer frontage. Kamala is a village-and-bay alternative; Bang Tao/Laguna favors a resort-led holiday with inland Cherng Talay as a separate connection. Rawai and Nai Harn form a southern base with different shorelines. Nai Yang is a northern beach choice for airport-linked nights, not a downtown substitute.
Phuket Old Town: food, shophouses and heritage walks

Old Town is the strongest fit when cafes, food and architecture matter more than a swimming beach outside the hotel. Thalang and Phang Nga roads give the stay a recognizable setting of shophouses, heritage buildings and small businesses. Thai Hua and other heritage museums add indoor stops, while the Sunday walking-street market creates a distinct food-focused reason to spend an evening here. Choose a room relative to these streets rather than assume every accommodation carrying the name Phuket is in the heritage core.
The airport-town bus is a separate service from the west-coast airport bus. Its arrival stop list includes Soi Rommanee and Bus Terminal 1, with the final approach depending on the building. Smart Bus also lists a town-Patong connection and a city shuttle, which can help with outings without making beach travel disappear. Choose Kata, Karon or another beach base when swimming and waterfront downtime dominate each day. Old Town works best when the town is the destination, not simply because a beach hotel looked less convenient to the airport.
Plan it well: The map and image show Old Phuket Town. Chalong and the west-coast beaches are separate outings.
Phuket official tourism area informationPatong: nightlife and a busy beach-town stay
Patong suits visitors who want nightlife and tourist services to be close to the center of their stay. The beach, restaurant concentration and entertainment streets create a different holiday from a village bay or a large resort compound. Choose the specific block around the activities you intend to use, rather than assume every Patong hotel has the same walking experience. A hillside property can be in Patong without being an easy walk back from dinner or the beachfront.
Phuket Smart Bus names Patong on the airport-Rawai corridor and separately lists a Phuket Town-Patong route. Those connections are useful evidence of actual service, not hotel-door drop-offs or guaranteed journey times. The principal trade-off is the evening environment: entertainment convenience matters more here than the character of a secluded resort stay. Choose Kamala or Nai Yang when a different bay setting is the aim, or Old Town when food and heritage walks dominate. Patong still leaves onward road journeys for many other island destinations.
Plan it well: The pin marks Patong Beach, not the entrance to an entertainment venue or a particular hillside hotel.
Phuket official tourism area informationKata: a beach-led stay around a smaller bay

Kata is a useful choice when the holiday should revolve around a beach but not primarily around Patong's entertainment streets. The provincial tourism page distinguishes Kata Yai from the smaller adjoining Kata Noi and documents the accommodation and shopping setting. Meals and beach time can anchor an independently planned stay, provided the hotel is in the catchment you actually want. The broad Kata name should not conceal a different bay, a hill or a final approach that changes the daily walk.
The west-coast airport bus lists Kata, with onward connections along the corridor through Karon and Patong. That does not establish a stop beside every Kata Noi hotel. Confirm the actual stop and final route before depending on it with luggage. Old Town remains a road outing, and the day's sea conditions need their own judgment rather than a conclusion drawn from a beach photograph. Choose Old Town for repeated heritage and cafe walks, or Karon when a longer open frontage better matches the beach holiday you are planning.
Plan it well: The map and photograph identify Kata beach. They do not certify a Kata Noi hotel approach or present swimming conditions.
Phuket official tourism area informationKaron: an extended beach frontage

Karon favors travelers who want a long beach frontage and a choice of accommodation and restaurant clusters along it. The provincial description records the beach, shops and dining rather than a single tightly bounded village center. Choose the stretch you expect to use: proximity to the shore does not automatically mean proximity to your preferred meals or the relevant crossing. It provides a different setting from Kata's smaller bays and Patong's more entertainment-focused streets.
The airport-Rawai bus corridor explicitly includes Karon, but the final resort-to-stop distance remains a separate check. Moving between beach sections and traveling to Old Town are road decisions, not proof that everything is walkable from a Karon address. The existing photograph is a genuine 2004 landscape and is not evidence of today's facilities. Choose Kata when a smaller-bay setting matters more than an extended frontage; choose Patong when evening entertainment is the reason for staying. Karon makes more sense when the beach itself is the daily focus.
Plan it well: The pin marks Karon Beach. The licensed image was photographed in 2004 and does not show current hotel development.
Phuket official tourism area informationKamala: a village-and-bay alternative

Kamala is a useful alternative for visitors who prefer a bay and village setting to Patong's entertainment concentration. The provincial tourism page describes the beach, village and restaurant offer, giving the stay a more specific rationale than simply calling it relaxing. Choose a hotel relative to the village and beach streets you intend to use. A resort on a hill or beyond the central catchment can produce a quite different walking experience even when the booking uses the same Kamala label.
Smart Bus explicitly names Kamala on its airport-west-coast route and connects it with Patong and the northwestern corridor. Confirm the stop and hotel approach rather than expect a beachfront drop-off. Old Town visits require additional road travel, so Kamala is less convincing for a town-heavy itinerary. Phuket FantaSea is a real local venue, shown in the photograph, but its performances are optional and include animals; it is not the beach itself. Choose Old Town for heritage evenings or Patong when nightlife proximity outweighs the village setting.
Plan it well: The photograph shows Phuket FantaSea's entrance in Kamala; the map separately marks Kamala Beach. Neither is a hotel entrance.
Phuket official tourism area informationBang Tao / Laguna: a resort-centered longer stay
Bang Tao and the Laguna cluster suit a holiday that deliberately gives the resort and broad beach a substantial role. The official provincial page identifies this resort setting, while Cherng Talay provides a separate inland service and dining catchment. That distinction is essential: a hotel near inland businesses and a beachfront compound can both be sold under the wider area's name without giving the same daily walk. Compare where you will actually eat and spend time, not just whether a listing mentions Bang Tao.
The airport-west-coast operator names Cherng Talay, but that does not verify a stop at every Laguna resort or along the entire beach. A final local connection may be needed, and any resort shuttle is that property's arrangement rather than a neighborhood-wide service. The trade-off is the separation between broad resort grounds, beach and street dining. Choose Kata or central Kamala when a more compact immediate catchment matters, or Old Town for heritage and food walks. This base works best when the resort setting is a positive part of the itinerary.
Plan it well: The pin identifies Bang Thao Beach, not Cherng Talay's inland dining streets or a resort shuttle stop.
Phuket official tourism area informationRawai / Nai Harn: southern dining and a separate beach

The southern base works when Rawai's waterfront restaurants and boat-outing setting, together with Nai Harn beach, are intentional parts of the holiday. They are different shorelines: choosing a room for dinner beside Rawai does not place it at Nai Harn's lagoon and beach. Promthep Cape is another nearby outing rather than Rawai's main street. Decide which daily activity should be closest to the hotel and how you will travel between the other stops, especially for a longer stay.
Smart Bus names Sai Yuan and Rawai on the airport corridor but does not establish a direct Nai Harn beach stop. The final journey between waterfront, hotel and beach therefore needs attention. Southern geography also leaves road travel to the airport and northern beaches; no guaranteed duration follows from the route map. Choose Kata or Karon when one beach-town catchment is the priority, or Old Town for repeated heritage evenings. This southern choice is useful precisely because it offers different activities, not because all of them are beside the same accommodation.
Plan it well: The pin and photograph show Nai Harn beach, the beach component of this southern base. They do not mark Rawai waterfront.
Phuket official tourism area informationNai Yang: northern beach and airport-linked nights

Nai Yang is a sensible choice for visitors who want a northern beach setting around arrival or departure, or who prefer this shore to a nightly downtown program. The provincial page identifies the beach's casuarina-fringed setting and airport-side geography; Sirinat supplies the park context. Beach-side meals and time near the shore give the stay a real purpose beyond being somewhere to wait for a flight. Choose the exact village or resort address rather than conclude that every airport-side hotel is beside the sand.
The airport-town operator lists Naiyang in one direction and Family Mart/The Slate in the other. Those named stops are useful leads, but boarding position and final hotel access still need checking. Airport proximity is not a promise of a suitable luggage walk from the terminal. Repeated Old Town, southern-beach or nightlife outings reduce this base's advantage. Choose Patong for entertainment-led evenings or Old Town for heritage days; choose Nai Yang when the northern shore and airport connection genuinely fit the shape of the stay.
Plan it well: The image genuinely depicts Nai Yang beach. The map is the verified Sirinat National Park point, not a Nai Yang hotel or terminal entrance.

Town and west coast use different airport services
Airport Bus route 8411 serves Phuket Town/Bus Terminal 1. Phuket Smart Bus's airport-Rawai corridor serves named west-coast stops including Patong, Karon and Kata. Choose the route for the actual hotel, not the word Phuket alone.
Airport Bus Phuket: route 8411 stop listCheck the coastal last leg
The west-coast route names Cherng Talay, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Sai Yuan and Rawai. A Cherng Talay or Rawai stop does not establish hotel-door service at Laguna or Nai Harn.
Phuket Smart Bus: airport-Rawai routeUse the current town connections
The operator now lists Bus Terminal 2-Phuket Town-Patong and a separate Dragon Line city shuttle. Its timetable notes traffic-dependent timing; check the route and live position rather than assume a fixed transfer duration.
