Antalya city guide
10 things to do in Antalya
Combine the lanes and landmarks of Kaleici with a Mediterranean afternoon, then choose one ancient city for a longer outing beyond central Antalya.

Plan your visit
Antalya is more than a resort transfer point. Its old town sits above the sea, while important ancient cities occupy the plains and mountains outside the centre. Keep those distances visible in your plans: a Kaleici walk and a beach afternoon are one kind of day; Termessos or Aspendos needs a separate transport decision. This guide keeps the city stops and longer outings distinct.
Enter the old town through Hadrian's Gate

Hadrian's Gate gives you a tangible transition from the modern city into Kaleici. Look at the three arches, the columns and the contrast between the monument and its neighbouring buildings before moving through. The gate commemorates the Roman emperor Hadrian, but its value on a first visit is also practical: it is a clear landmark from which to begin exploring the old streets.
Combine the monument with a walk rather than arranging a separate journey just for a photograph. The paving and changes of level deserve attention, particularly if you are carrying bags or travelling with someone who finds steps difficult. Keep the passage clear for other pedestrians and choose a meeting point beside, rather than beneath, the arches. A later return can offer different light without requiring another organised excursion.
Plan it well: Wear shoes that grip uneven stone; a historic gateway is not automatically a step-free entrance.
Turkish Culture Portal Hadrian's GateFollow Kaleicis lanes towards the harbour

Kaleici is the part of Antalya to explore at street level. Traditional houses, small courtyards and changing views towards the harbour make a compact route more interesting than a hunt for every named landmark. Start with the gate or a central square, follow a few lanes, and leave time to notice upper-storey windows and the way older buildings adapt to the slope.
The descent towards the harbour also means a climb back out, so consider the return before choosing a waterside lunch. Shops, guesthouses and homes share these streets: an open doorway is not an invitation to enter or photograph an interior. In hot weather, shorten the route and take breaks instead of saving all your walking for the most exposed part of the afternoon. An evening stroll is a separate, quieter-paced option.
Plan it well: Check the return route uphill before descending with a pushchair or anyone with limited walking stamina.
Antalya Governorate Kaleici overviewGive Termessos a mountain day of its own

Termessos offers a different ancient-city experience from the coastal plain. Its mountain setting gives the theatre and scattered ruins a landscape context that a close-up monument photograph cannot convey. Treat the approach and the paths as part of the outing: you are visiting a rugged archaeological site, not stepping directly from a city pavement into a single indoor attraction.
Arrange the outward and return transport before leaving Antalya, and ask about the actual walking involved from the vehicle stopping point. Uneven ground and uphill stretches can make this an unsuitable choice for some mobility needs or very hot conditions. Carry water, protect yourself from the sun and follow site instructions. Choose Termessos because you want the mountain setting, rather than adding it to an already crowded circuit of several ruins.
Plan it well: Ask the operator about the walking terrain, not just whether hotel pickup is included.

Lower Duden is the coastal cascade where river water falls over the cliffs into the Mediterranean. It gives a Lara-side day a distinct destination beyond the beach hotels. Walk the public viewing area and look at the meeting of cliffs, water and sea, keeping behind barriers rather than searching for a more dramatic photograph at the edge.
The name Duden also refers to an inland waterfall, so specify Lower Duden when arranging transport or comparing tours. An inland cave-and-waterfall visit is not the same experience as this sea-facing viewpoint. Spray, weather and light affect what you see, and a boat excursion is a separate activity with its own route and conditions. You do not need a cruise booking to make the coastal landscape your reason for coming.
Plan it well: Confirm that a tour listing means Lower Duden if the waterfall into the sea is the image you want to see.
Western Mediterranean Development Agency Antalya guideSpend an unhurried afternoon at Konyaalti

Konyaalti is a useful counterweight to a morning of narrow old-town streets. The long waterfront lets you choose between a promenade walk, a meal and time on the beach rather than committing to a full activity package. Pick a particular stretch before travelling: the beach is extensive, and a vague destination can leave your group far from the facilities or meeting point you expected.
Beach operators, equipment hire and swimming conditions are separate considerations. Check the local flags and posted instructions on the day, and do not infer calm water from a photograph. The shoreline includes pebbles, so footwear can matter even when your plan is simply to walk by the sea. Compare the cost of optional loungers or umbrellas before settling in, then leave yourself enough time for the journey back to your hotel.
Plan it well: Use a named access point for pickups and meeting arrangements along the long waterfront.
Antalya municipality beaches and baysPause among Karaalioglu Park's sculptures

Karaalioglu Park makes room for a slower stop beside the historic centre. Its coastal outlook, planting and public sculptures offer something to notice without another ticketed visit. The Worker and Son monument is one of the park landmarks; use it as a point on a short circuit rather than making the whole outing a race between viewpoints.
Bring the park into a Kaleici day when you need a break, not only when every other attraction has been completed. Shade and a seat may be more valuable than walking the full perimeter during warm weather. Stay on public paths near the cliffs and keep children within sight. If the weather turns, shorten the loop and return to the nearby streets instead of treating an outdoor pause as a fixed appointment.
Plan it well: Leave this as the adjustable part of an old-town day, especially when heat makes a longer walk tiring.

The Yivli Minare is a recognisable marker of Antalya's Seljuk heritage. Its brick-built, fluted shaft gives you a reason to look up from the shopfronts and compare a different architectural language with the Roman gate. View the minaret and the surrounding mosque complex together; isolating the tower in a photograph misses the buildings that give it a setting.
A mosque visit needs to follow the arrangements in force when you arrive. Dress respectfully, give worshippers space and follow staff instructions about footwear, entry and photography. Seeing a staircase described in a historical source does not mean visitors can climb the minaret today. Keep the exterior as a worthwhile stop in its own right, with any permitted interior visit a separate decision rather than an entitlement included in your sightseeing plan.
Plan it well: Do not assume the minaret is a public viewing tower; use posted visitor arrangements for the mosque complex.
Turkish Culture Portal Yivli Minare MosqueMake Hidirlik Tower a coastal landmark stop

Hidirlik Tower sits where a walk through Kaleici opens towards the coastal park. Notice the rounded upper structure above its square base and how the heavy stonework differs from the houses in the surrounding lanes. It is a compact architectural stop, with the waterfront setting doing as much work as the building itself in giving you a sense of Antalya's old defensive edge.
Keep your plan based on an exterior view unless current official arrangements confirm an interior visit. Restoration work or barriers can change how close you can approach, and neither a map pin nor a historical photograph guarantees access inside. Combine the tower with Karaalioglu Park, then choose whether to return through the streets or stop nearby for a drink. There is little benefit in arranging separate transport for two adjacent landmarks.
Plan it well: Follow current barriers around the tower and cliff edge; older photos may show different access.
Antalya municipality historic-centre landmarksRead the street plan of ancient Perge

Perge is a good choice if you enjoy understanding how an ancient city functioned. Its streets, public buildings and water-related structures let you connect ruins into a plan rather than treating them as isolated columns. Take a site map or use interpretation on arrival, and concentrate on the relationship between the main routes, gathering places and the buildings along them.
The official site currently flags the ancient theatre as temporarily closed for restoration, so do not book this outing solely on a promise of entering that building. Verify the notice again before travelling; excavation and conservation can alter accessible areas. Most of the visit is outdoors, making sun protection and water useful planning priorities. Arrange the return journey from Aksu and avoid combining so many archaeological sites that each becomes only a hurried photograph.
Plan it well: Confirm the theatre's current status separately from general admission to the archaeological site.
Perge official admission and restoration noticesGive Aspendos theatre time to register

Aspendos makes a strong single-site outing because its theatre still communicates the scale and organisation of a Roman performance space. Look from the lower level first, then decide how much of the seating you want to climb. The stage building and the arc of the cavea are worth observing together, not simply using as the background for a quick portrait.
There are remains beyond the theatre, including the ancient city and aqueducts, but extending the visit needs more walking and a realistic transport plan. The seating has steep stone steps; accessible viewing and a full climb are not equivalent activities. Check the operator for current admission and any event arrangements before setting out. A scheduled performance is a separate booking, and an old festival listing is not proof that one will occur during your stay.
Plan it well: Decide whether you want the theatre alone or a wider archaeological outing before agreeing to a tour itinerary.
Aspendos official visitor informationHow to spend two days in Antalya
Day one: the historic centre
Begin at Hadrian's Gate, wander Kaleici and visit Yivli Minare under the posted arrangements. Continue to Hidirlik Tower and Karaalioglu Park for a coastal pause. Keep the harbour descent optional if steps or heat are a concern.
Day two: choose coast or archaeology
For a relaxed city day, visit Lower Duden and leave the afternoon for Konyaalti. For an archaeological day, replace those stops with Perge and, if transport and stamina allow, Aspendos. Termessos is a separate mountain alternative, not an additional stop on either circuit.
Before you go
Check the real hotel location
A property sold for an Antalya holiday can be well outside the city centre. Compare travel to Kaleici, your chosen beach and the airport before deciding which outings to combine.
Give outdoor visits a weather margin
Ruins, coastal paths and old-town lanes offer different amounts of shade. Carry water and avoid building the whole itinerary around strenuous walking during the hottest part of the day.
Use current transport and site notices
Confirm routes, return journeys and site access with operators. Historic brochures provide context, but their ticket prices and schedules should not be treated as current.
Antalya transport card informationChoose between old-town access and beach time
Kaleici can suit travellers who want lanes and evening meals nearby, but check steps, vehicle access and potential street noise. Konyaalti favours waterfront time; Lara-area resorts require a different transport plan for the old town. Compare exact locations and room details rather than assuming every Antalya hotel is convenient for the same itinerary.
