10 things to do in Los Angeles

Build an LA trip around art, film and the Pacific: ten distinct stops, realistic neighbourhood groupings, and booking choices that leave room for the city.

Plan your visit

Los Angeles rewards choosing an area before choosing an attraction. Its museums, hillside viewpoints and beach neighbourhoods belong to different days, not a single cross-city dash. These ten stops offer several ways into LA; a two-day visit will comfortably cover only a selection. Santa Monica is a separate coastal city in the metropolitan area, while Universal Studios sits in Universal City.

Look out over LA from Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory gives a first visit a useful sense of scale: the buildings below stretch toward the ocean while the surrounding park provides a very different foreground. Make the view part of an astronomy visit, rather than arriving only for a photograph. Inside, select a few exhibits that interest you, then return outdoors to compare the city and the Hollywood hills. Clear visibility is a bonus, not something to promise.

The official visitor page distinguishes free building admission from the planetarium programme and paid nearby parking. Check the calendar before travelling uphill, particularly if your trip includes Monday, and decide whether you want a show or simply the grounds and exhibits. Sunset is popular, so leave breathing room for the journey and your return. A hillside stop is easier to enjoy when dinner is not booked across the city immediately afterwards.

Plan it well: Use the official Getting Here page to compare DASH, walking and parking options; the observatory is not a close-up access point to the Hollywood letters.

Give the Getty Center an unhurried afternoon

The Getty Center combines a substantial art collection with a setting that deserves attention in its own right. Choose a manageable group of galleries, then spend time among the terraces and garden rather than trying to see everything indoors. Looking between the architecture, planted spaces and distant city makes this a satisfying half-day even for travellers who do not normally build their holidays around art museums.

Free admission still requires a timed-entry reservation on the official site, and parking is a separate charge. Allow for the arrival process and the journey up to the campus before estimating how long you have for the collection. Review current gallery renovation notices so that a single favourite work does not become an unsupported promise. Keep this as a westside anchor; a late return to Downtown or Hollywood needs its own transport allowance.

Plan it well: Getty Center and Getty Villa are different destinations. Confirm the museum name before booking your reservation or directions.

See the curves of Walt Disney Concert Hall

Walt Disney Concert Hall is worth noticing from several street angles before you decide how to experience it inside. The sweeping metal surfaces change as you move around the building, making a short exterior walk a useful architectural stop on a Downtown day. Pair it with food at Grand Central Market, allowing for the slopes between Bunker Hill and Broadway rather than assuming every block is flat.

A daytime architectural visit and an evening concert are different plans. LA Phil publishes venue-tour information separately from its performance calendar, so check what is actually available on your date. For a concert, choose music you want to hear and allow time for entry, seating and the return journey. Do not interpret access to a lobby or garden as admission to the auditorium, and avoid scheduling another timed attraction immediately beforehand.

Plan it well: Check the official tour page for access restrictions around rehearsals and performances; an exterior look remains a separate experience.

Study a different LA at Hollyhock House

Hollyhock House provides a smaller architectural encounter than a large museum: look at how walls, ornament and outdoor space relate to one another. The Frank Lloyd Wright house sits in Barnsdall Art Park, where the surrounding hilltop gives the building room to breathe. It is a good choice for travellers interested in design who would prefer one focused visit to a day spent collecting distant celebrity addresses.

Buy from the house itself and read the visitor notices before committing to a day. Different tour formats and self-guided admission can have different schedules, and the published page includes holiday closures. This historic interior also has steps and restrictions on large bags and footwear, so check your specific access requirements rather than relying on the presence of a ramp at the entrance. Combine it with nearby East Hollywood or Los Feliz, leaving a separate block for Griffith Park.

Plan it well: Park access is not house admission. Resolve ticket availability first if the interior is the reason for your visit.

Find deep time at La Brea Tar Pits

La Brea Tar Pits makes a surprising contrast with the busy streets around it. Instead of film history or contemporary art, the focus is the evidence of animals and environments long before the modern city. Start by understanding what the tar deposits preserved, then use the museum to connect individual fossils with the process of discovery. It is especially rewarding for visitors who like seeing how scientific knowledge is assembled.

Distinguish the outdoor setting from a ticketed museum visit when comparing time and cost. The official ticket page is the place to check current admission choices, while demonstrations or special activities need their own programme check. Read the displays as evidence rather than treating the pits as a theme-park spectacle. A Mid-Wilshire afternoon works better with lunch nearby than with an ambitious detour to the coast, and outdoor portions can be shortened if the weather turns.

Plan it well: Check which activities your ticket includes before buying; an outdoor walk does not substitute for the museum collection.

Choose a lawful viewpoint for the Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign works best as a destination you view, not a structure you try to reach. Decide whether your priority is a photograph, a park walk or a longer hike, because those choices require different amounts of time and energy. From a suitable public viewpoint the letters belong to the wider hillside landscape; a longer trail is an outdoor activity in its own right, not a shortcut between city attractions.

The official sign organisation states that the immediate sign area is restricted and touching the letters is prohibited. Use its recommended trails and viewpoints, then verify park conditions before setting out. Carry water, wear shoes suited to uneven ground and avoid the hottest part of a warm day. Residential streets have their own parking rules, and a map pin for the monument is not a driving destination or an instruction to pass a gate.

Plan it well: The sign is not illuminated at night. Keep this an authorised daytime viewpoint or hike, with a planned return route.

Walk the residential paths of Venice Canals

The Venice Canals offer a quieter coastal stop than the nearby boardwalk. Follow a few public paths and footbridges, noticing how the waterways shape the houses and gardens rather than searching for a single must-see building. This is a residential district, not an enclosed attraction, so a modest loop is usually more satisfying than trying to turn every bank into a sightseeing route.

The local association describes the surviving six-canal grid and pedestrian bridges, making its map a useful starting point. Stay on public walkways, leave entrances clear and keep photographs focused on the waterways rather than residents through windows. Add beach time or a meal in Venice if you want a longer outing, but treat Santa Monica as a separate coastal leg with its own travel time. Accessibility across bridges and narrow paths should be checked for your needs.

Plan it well: Do not assume there is a gondola service or public access to private docks simply because the neighbourhood has canals.

Make lunch the main event at Grand Central Market

Grand Central Market gives a Downtown itinerary a useful pause that is also an experience. Take an initial lap before ordering so that the first queue does not decide your meal. The mix of counters and cuisines makes it practical for companions with different preferences, but it is still worth choosing one satisfying lunch rather than attempting to sample every stall in a single visit.

Use the market as the flexible middle of a day that includes Bunker Hill architecture or another Downtown attraction. Vendor hours, menus and queues are individual matters, so verify the specific counter if you are travelling for a particular dish or have dietary requirements. Shared seating can be busy at lunchtime; eating earlier or later may make the visit more relaxed. Keep your return transport in mind if an evening performance follows, rather than relying on an optimistic cross-city drive.

Plan it well: Ask the vendor directly about allergens and preparation. A busy food hall cannot guarantee identical opening times or dietary arrangements across stalls.

Give Santa Monica Pier a coastal afternoon

Santa Monica Pier is an easy way to let the Pacific set the pace for part of your trip. Walk out over the water, watch the activity around the amusements, and leave time for the beach rather than treating the pier as a quick stop before returning inland. Its appeal is partly the contrast between the broad shoreline and the compact, busy structure above it.

The pier, amusement rides, aquarium and food businesses are separate experiences with their own arrangements. Consult the pier website and the relevant operator before promising a particular activity to children or booking around it. Santa Monica is its own city within the LA region, so look at transport from your actual accommodation rather than assuming a Los Angeles address means a short journey. Coastal wind can make a light extra layer useful even when the inland afternoon has felt warm.

Plan it well: Walking on the pier does not include ride admission. Leave a clear plan for the trip back to your hotel.

Set aside a full day for Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood suits travellers who want film-themed rides and the organised experience of a theme park. Give it a whole day rather than using it as a brief studio stop between museums. Choose your priorities with your companions before arrival: a family interested in shows may have a different satisfying day from a group focused on the biggest rides.

Read the park calendar, ticket conditions and individual ride accommodations on the official site before purchasing. General admission, express access and other experiences are not interchangeable products, and access to the surrounding CityWalk is not theme-park admission. The Studio Tour is a park attraction, distinct from a separate private studio visit elsewhere in the region. Allow for queues, breaks and movement between areas, and avoid a distant dinner reservation that depends on leaving at an exact minute.

Plan it well: Check height requirements, health guidance and any attraction closures for your party; no ticket can guarantee that every ride will operate.

How to spend two days in Los Angeles

Day one: Downtown, then the hills

Begin with Walt Disney Concert Hall exterior or a confirmed tour, take lunch at Grand Central Market, and choose Griffith Observatory later in the day if the calendar allows. Keep the Downtown-to-Griffith journey deliberately loose. A concert evening can replace the hilltop visit.

Day two: choose art or the coast

Reserve the Getty Center for an art-led day and keep the westside afternoon local. Alternatively, spend the day around Santa Monica Pier and Venice Canals, with travel time between them. Universal Studios needs a separate full day; Hollyhock House and La Brea are additional focused choices, not compulsory extras.

Before you go

Group by geography

Downtown, Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire and the coast are different planning areas. Compare live transit routes and driving conditions from your hotel before putting two timed reservations together.

LA Metro trip planning

Separate entry from extras

Museum admission, parking, planetarium shows, pier rides and express theme-park access can be separate products. Read the operator conditions instead of comparing headline prices alone.

Treat park outings as outdoor days

Check current weather, heat and fire-related park notices before a hillside walk. Carry water and keep to authorised routes; a landmark coordinate is not a trailhead.

Choose a base that fits your plans

Choose a base for the LA you plan to see: Downtown for urban culture and transit connections, Hollywood for the northern attractions, or the westside for an art-and-coast emphasis. Compare the full journey to your first activity, parking charges and late-evening transport before selecting a room.
