10 things to do in Orlando

Choose theme-park days deliberately, then see Orlando's gardens, downtown lake and cultural institutions, with clear distinctions between the city and nearby resort areas.

Plan your visit

Orlando is both a city and a name used for a large visitor region. Downtown, Universal and the Disney resort area are not one walkable district, and a theme park usually deserves a day rather than a spare afternoon. These ten choices balance headline parks with gardens and museums; they are not a complete park list. Hollywood Studios and Epic Universe are other options to compare. Lake Buena Vista and Winter Park below are clearly identified regional alternatives, not neighbourhoods within downtown Orlando.

Make Magic Kingdom a day of its own

Magic Kingdom is the Disney park built around a castle-centred landscape and themed lands, making it a different choice from EPCOT or Animal Kingdom. Choose it because those experiences fit your group, not because an Orlando visit supposedly requires every park. A manageable plan includes a few priorities, food and rest rather than a promise to complete all rides. The setting itself rewards time between attractions.

Check the current admission conditions, date requirements and attraction rules on the official site. The arrival can involve parking, security and additional resort transport before you reach the gates, so a short driving estimate is not the whole journey. Height restrictions and ride closures should inform family plans before tickets are purchased. Leave flexibility for weather and fatigue, and avoid attaching an unrelated city museum to the same day simply because both appear on an Orlando map.

Plan it well: Plan the complete arrival through security and resort transport, not just the road journey.

Give EPCOT room for both halves of the visit

EPCOT combines attractions with the landscaped World Showcase pavilions, so the visit can suit groups interested in more than a sequence of thrill rides. Decide how much attention you want to give each side of the park and leave time to walk between them. The pavilions are themed presentations rather than substitutes for visiting the countries themselves, but their architecture and food settings create useful variety within one day.

Check current tickets, attraction arrangements and any seasonal programme directly with Disney. Festival dates or menus from an older guide should not be treated as permanent features. The amount of walking makes footwear, water and breaks important even when your ride list is short. Agree how the group will divide and meet again, and reserve any particular meal on its own terms. A calmer route through a few priorities is more useful than an itinerary that depends on everything operating perfectly.

Plan it well: Build rest into the route; a short attraction list can still involve considerable walking.

Choose Animal Kingdom for trails as well as rides

Disney's Animal Kingdom combines animal viewing, planted paths and themed attractions, giving it a different focus from a castle-led park day. Let the trails and landscape have a place in your route rather than treating them as gaps between ride queues. Animal activity is not something an itinerary can guarantee, and a patient look at a habitat can be more rewarding than rushing on because a photograph did not happen immediately.

Use the official programme to check current attractions, access conditions and any scheduled experiences before choosing the day. Weather and the outdoor setting should shape your pace. Carry water, follow instructions around animals and avoid feeding or trying to attract their attention. Food, transport and rest need the same planning as a headline ride. This is one full-day option among the region's parks, not an easy add-on to a morning at Magic Kingdom or a distant downtown visit.

Plan it well: Do not promise wildlife sightings or animal behaviour at a fixed time.

Choose Universal Studios Florida for its own worlds

Universal Studios Florida is one park within the larger Universal Orlando resort, with film- and story-led environments offering a different day from Islands of Adventure. Decide which experiences actually interest your group before choosing a ticket. The park's themed streets are part of the visit as well as the rides, so leave time to notice them instead of planning a route made entirely of queue targets.

Current admission products can cover different combinations of parks, and the name Universal alone does not specify what is included. The Hogwarts Express connection with Islands of Adventure requires the appropriate Park-to-Park admission. Check official conditions and ride requirements rather than assuming an ordinary single-park ticket covers the journey. Resort parking, security and the approach to the entrance also need time. Epic Universe is another park to compare, not an automatic extension of this visit or a short walk through the same gates.

Plan it well: Check the named parks and access conditions on your actual ticket, not the resort name alone.

Pick Islands of Adventure with the whole group in mind

Islands of Adventure brings several themed lands into one park, including experiences that may appeal to visitors seeking larger rides as well as richly built environments. Choose it for the interests and comfort levels of the people travelling, not as a compulsory partner to Universal Studios Florida. A useful plan gives people who do not ride everything meaningful breaks and meeting points rather than leaving them to wait without a route.

Read current ride restrictions and official accessibility information before purchasing admission, especially for anyone with health or mobility considerations. Express products, early entry and hotel benefits are separate conditions, not universal features of every booking. If you want the Hogwarts Express between the two parks, confirm the required admission product. Leave space for weather and changes in operation. Trying to visit this park, Universal Studios and a downtown attraction in one day can create more transfers than worthwhile time.

Plan it well: Hotel proximity does not establish early-entry or Express eligibility; read the specific booking benefits.

Meet downtown Orlando at Lake Eola

Lake Eola Park gives downtown Orlando a clear public-space focus, with the lake, fountain and surrounding skyline providing a different scene from the resort corridors. Walk a comfortable portion of the loop and notice the gardens and public art rather than hurrying around to complete a distance. It is a useful place to see the city as somewhere people live and spend time, not only somewhere visitors buy attraction tickets.

Boat hire and scheduled events are separate from an ordinary park walk, so check the current municipal information when you want a specific activity. Leave wildlife undisturbed and follow posted park rules. Shade varies, and thunderstorms need proper shelter rather than a wait beside the water. Combine the stop with a downtown meal or a gentler city day, allowing for the journey from an International Drive or Disney-area hotel instead of describing the lake as being beside every Orlando resort.

Plan it well: Downtown is a separate journey from the resort corridors; plan the return as well as the walk.

Change pace among Leu Gardens' planting

Harry P. Leu Gardens offers a planted change of pace from theme parks, with paths and collections that reward a slower visit. Look at foliage, forms and the way the grounds are arranged rather than expecting one flower display to be present throughout the year. A manageable circuit is enough for a satisfying outing, especially when travelling with someone who would prefer less sensory intensity than a park-and-rides day.

Check the official visitor page and current events before arriving. At this guide's review, the historic Leu House Museum was listed as temporarily closed, so garden admission should not be read as a promise of an interior house visit. Ask about suitable routes if mobility or walking stamina matters, and carry water despite the planted setting. The gardens are within Orlando but away from the resort corridors; plan that road or transit journey rather than attaching the stop to an already full theme-park day.

Plan it well: The gardens and Leu House have separate access conditions; check the current house notice.

Leave time to experiment at Orlando Science Center

Orlando Science Center is an alternative to a ride-led family day, with interactive exhibits encouraging visitors to try, compare and ask questions. Choose a few areas appropriate to the group rather than trying to cover every floor at the same speed. Older children and adults may want longer with an experiment, while younger visitors benefit from a route with more pauses. The museum format allows a different kind of shared activity.

Consult the current daily calendar and visitor information for opening arrangements, scheduled programmes and the correct entrance. The centre describes access through the bridge from its parking-garage side, which matters when planning an arrival rather than following a general building pin. Check what admission includes and what is separately scheduled. A visit can pair with a nearby cultural district stop, but leave enough time for hands-on attention instead of assuming it is merely an indoor refuge between outdoor bookings.

Plan it well: Use the published visitor entrance instructions, not only the building's map position.

Look closely at Tiffany work in Winter Park

The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art is a reason to spend part of a regional day in Winter Park, with its celebrated Louis Comfort Tiffany holdings offering a different focus from Orlando's larger attraction complexes. Look at colour, light and craftsmanship rather than treating decorative objects as background. A few carefully considered works can make the visit worthwhile without needing specialist knowledge or a long list of things to recognise.

Check the museum's current visitor information and what is on display before setting out. Winter Park is a separate city north of Orlando, so the journey should be planned from your actual base. A Park Avenue meal or short surrounding walk can complement the visit without turning it into a rushed tour of every local institution. Follow photography and bag rules, and leave time to absorb the collection rather than reserving another distant attraction immediately afterwards.

Plan it well: Winter Park is a regional alternative, not a neighbourhood beside the Disney parks.

Use Disney Springs as a flexible resort-area evening

Disney Springs is a shopping, dining and entertainment district rather than a theme park, making it an option for a more flexible visit in the Disney resort area. You can choose a waterside walk and a meal without planning a full ride itinerary. The built setting and changing mix of businesses reward browsing, but there is no need to convert every stop into a purchase or paid activity.

Restaurants, shows and other experiences have their own availability and conditions, so reserve a particular plan directly and read what it includes. Check current arrival and parking information, or confirm the transport offered by your accommodation. A hotel shuttle to a Disney park does not automatically establish service to Disney Springs. This is best treated as an evening near a compatible base rather than a reason to cross the visitor region after an exhausting park day with no return arrangement.

Plan it well: Check the exact hotel transport destination: parks and Disney Springs are not interchangeable stops.

A flexible 2-day Orlando itinerary

Day one: one park, properly planned

Choose Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom or a Universal park according to your group. Plan admission, the complete arrival and breaks, then keep the evening near your base rather than adding a downtown transfer.

Day two: the city or a second resort day

For a change of pace, combine Lake Eola with Leu Gardens or Orlando Science Center, or make Winter Park and the Morse Museum the main outing. A second theme park is an alternative to that city day, not an extra item in it.

Practical planning tips

Regional journeys

Use LYNX's current trip tools for the exact origin and destination. Compare the complete route and return rather than assuming city transit reaches every park entrance directly.

Regional journeys: official information

Park admission

Read the current ticket, date, ride and reservation conditions with the operator. Universal Park-to-Park access and hotel benefits must be checked against the actual product.

Indoor alternatives and closures

Check current museum calendars and Leu House access before replacing a weather-affected outdoor day. An indoor attraction is not guaranteed to be open whenever a park plan changes.

Find your base in Orlando

Match accommodation to your repeated journeys: downtown for city plans, International Drive for its corridor or the Universal area for those parks. Lake Buena Vista and Winter Park are separate regional bases that need their own destination searches. Compare actual shuttle terms, room layout and parking rather than a general close-to-parks claim.
