Johannesburg city guide
Where to stay in Johannesburg
Compare six real Johannesburg bases for airport rail, dining streets, university visits, residential stays and Soweto heritage, with honest transfer trade-offs.

Plan your visit
Johannesburg rewards a base chosen for your actual daily circuit rather than a claim to be close to everything. Its business districts, university streets, residential suburbs and Soweto heritage sites are spread across the city. Airport rail is useful for some stays but does not solve every final leg. These six comparisons identify the streets and landmarks that make each base worthwhile, and the transport compromises that come with them.
Choose your base
Sandton Central suits business and the direct airport rail service. Rosebank combines its own commuter-line station with a shopping and cafe precinct. Melville trades rail proximity for Seventh Street and smaller guesthouses; Braamfontein suits a trip genuinely focused on Wits and inner-city cultural institutions.
Parkview and Saxonwold offer a residential alternative near the zoo and parks, with more reliance on onward transport. Orlando West is for a hosted Soweto-focused stay, not a shortcut to northern business districts. In every base, agree the actual arrival entrance and evening return plan with the accommodation.
Sandton Central: airport rail and business-hotel convenience

Sandton Central suits a trip where airport logistics, meetings and dependable hotel facilities are the main priorities. Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square concentrate shopping and restaurant choices, while the Convention Centre adds a clear reason to stay locally for an event. This is a northern business and retail district, not Johannesburg's historic city centre. Choose a hotel in the actual station-and-mall core if those are your daily destinations; a broader Sandton address can place you well away from this compact cluster.
Gautrain's airport service connects O.R. Tambo with Sandton, making this the simplest rail-based arrival of these bases. The station is around West Street and Rivonia Road; confirm the hotel's real entrance and last leg rather than inferring it from the skyline. The trade-off is a more corporate, shopping-led setting and road journeys to the Apartheid Museum, Soweto or much of the inner city's cultural circuit. Check the dated last train for a late arrival. Choose Rosebank for a different cafe-and-shopping routine, or Orlando West if the stay is principally about Soweto rather than meetings.
Plan it well: The photograph and pin identify Sandton City shopping centre. The Convention Centre is a separate building within Sandton Central.
Sandton Central: station location and district transportRosebank: shopping, cafes and a useful rail base

Rosebank is a useful first leisure base if you want a hotel cluster with shopping and cafe choices but do not need to sleep beside Sandton's convention facilities. Rosebank Mall and The Zone provide the everyday retail and dining circuit around Tyrwhitt and Cradock avenues, while the area's streets and newer accommodation create a different scale from the business towers farther north. City Sightseeing also uses The Zone as its Johannesburg tour starting point, which can simplify organised outings without making the museum circuit itself a neighbourhood walk.
Rosebank has its own Gautrain station on the commuter line. An airport rail arrival involves the airport service to Sandton and a change for Rosebank, followed by the hotel's confirmed final leg. Choose the actual hotel entrance relative to Oxford Road and the shopping precinct; a district name alone does not establish an easy luggage walk. The compromise is still a planned journey to Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and many inner-city sights. Check the train and tour schedules for your date, especially around a late arrival. Choose Sandton for a direct airport-line base or Melville for a smaller guesthouse and an independent dining street.
Plan it well: The district pin is Rosebank's verified Wikidata anchor; the licensed photograph depicts Tyrwhitt Street in June 2026, not a claim about every hotel frontage.
City of Johannesburg: Rosebank hotels, Gautrain and regional attractionsMelville: guesthouses and evenings around Seventh Street

Melville works when the evening you want is a local restaurant street rather than a mall or conference hotel. Seventh Street concentrates bars, eateries and small shops, with guesthouses in the surrounding residential blocks. The nearby universities help explain the area's youthful social character, while Melville Koppies provides a separate outdoor and heritage outing when a guided visit is available. A room just off the main dining strip can make more sense than one directly above it if you want both easy access to dinner and a quieter night.
There is no Gautrain station in Melville. From O.R. Tambo, compare a prearranged road transfer with the airport train to Sandton and an onward car journey; Rosebank or Park may suit other city journeys, but neither removes the last leg. The attraction is the suburb's scale and social life, not a transport shortcut. Bar noise, steep or uneven local streets and repeated car trips are meaningful considerations, particularly on a short stay packed with sights elsewhere. Arrange the return journey after an evening out. Choose Rosebank if rail and organised sightseeing matter more, or Parkview if residential downtime matters more than nightlife.
Plan it well: The photograph genuinely depicts Seventh Street in Melville. The map uses the suburb anchor, not a guarantee of a particular guesthouse's location or a walking route.
City of Johannesburg: Melville guesthouses and Seventh StreetBraamfontein: university culture and the inner-city museum circuit

Braamfontein suits travellers whose plans genuinely centre on Wits University and the inner city's cultural institutions. Wits Art Museum stands at Jorissen and Bertha streets, the Origins Centre is on the nearby university campus, and Constitution Hill provides another major visit towards the northeastern edge of the wider area. Student activity, offices and restaurant streets create an urban setting rather than a resort enclave; The Wing Republic is one current tourism-listed dining option. Choose this base because those destinations matter, not simply because a map labels it central.
Gautrain's Park station offers the inner-city rail connection after changing from the airport service at Sandton. The station-to-property leg needs a specific plan: ask the hotel for its recommended transfer and entrance, particularly with luggage or after dark. A cultural site nearby does not make all connecting streets equally suitable to explore casually, and university or event noise can affect some addresses. The reward is less backtracking for an institution-led trip; the compromise is more attention to everyday routes and pickups. Choose Rosebank for a less inner-city-oriented first stay, or Sandton if airport access and business facilities dominate.
Plan it well: The pin marks Wits Art Museum. The reused image documents Penny Siopis's 2015 installation there, not an exhibition promised for the current visit.
Wits Art Museum: entrance and visitor informationParkview and Saxonwold: residential stays near the zoo and parks

These adjoining residential suburbs suit a stay built around quieter accommodation, family outings and a local food-shopping routine. Parkview's Tyrone Avenue is the useful high street, with groceries, small retailers and restaurants; Zoo Lake and Johannesburg Zoo provide nearby daytime outings. Saxonwold places some properties closer to the zoo and the Military History museum rather than to the Tyrone Avenue shops. Treat those as different addresses within the same broader residential choice, not as a single strip with every attraction and restaurant outside the door.
Neither Parkview nor Saxonwold has its own Gautrain station. Rosebank is a useful rail gateway, with an onward car or confirmed feeder-bus route where it suits the property; an airport arrival can instead use a prearranged road transfer. The drawback is transport dependence for museums farther south, business meetings in Sandton and many evening plans. A leafy location also says nothing by itself about hotel services, accessibility or personal security. Ask how dinner and return journeys work at the exact address. Choose Rosebank if station proximity matters more than residential space, or Melville if your evening priority is a bar-and-restaurant street.
Plan it well: The photo and pin mark Johannesburg Zoo, whose public entrance is on Upper Park Drive; they do not define Parkview/Saxonwold or imply every property is beside the entrance.
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo: location and public entranceOrlando West: an overnight stay focused on Soweto

Orlando West is a genuine overnight option when Soweto is the main purpose of the visit rather than an excursion from a northern hotel. Mandela House on Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson museum precinct give the stay a clear heritage focus, with restaurants on the visitor circuit and locally hosted accommodation on adjoining streets. Lebo's, for example, confirms a lodge and guesthouse base in Orlando West with meals and guided experiences. That supports the area as a real stay choice without making one property an endorsement or treating all of Soweto as interchangeable.
Gautrain does not run into Orlando West. Confirm an airport pickup or an onward road transfer with your host, and plan local exploration with a responsible guide rather than choosing accommodation on a promised all-day walking route. The main trade-off is distance from Sandton meetings, Rosebank shopping and the airport rail network; staying here is less useful when most of the itinerary lies in northern Johannesburg. It is also a living residential community, not an open-air attraction. Choose it for a considered, hosted Soweto visit; choose Rosebank or Sandton if you want an urban hotel base and a separately organised day trip.
Plan it well: The image and map identify the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West. Vilakazi Street and guesthouse entrances are separate locations to confirm with the host.

Distinguish the two Gautrain services
The airport service links O.R. Tambo with Sandton; Rosebank and Park are on the commuter network and require a change. Check the operator's dated journey plan and last departure before making rail part of a late arrival. Melville, the parks suburbs and Orlando West still require a separate final leg.
Gautrain: official service and network informationUse the real feeder-route map
A nearby rail station does not establish a bus to the hotel door. Match a Gautrain feeder route, stop and operating date to the exact address, or confirm a road pickup; weekend and holiday arrangements can differ.
Gautrain: route planner, schedules and bus mapsRosebank can simplify organised sightseeing
City Sightseeing starts its Johannesburg tour at The Zone on the Tyrwhitt Avenue pedestrian precinct. Check the current route and departure date, then compare the hotel entrance with the meeting point; the starting stop does not put Soweto or the Apartheid Museum within walking distance.

Official travel advice warns about crime around transport hubs and airport journeys. Arrange reliable pickups, keep to locally advised routes and avoid casual after-dark walks. A shopping district, leafy street or security guard is not a neighbourhood-wide safety guarantee.
FCDO: South Africa transport and security adviceAn Orlando West stay needs a host-led plan
Confirm the overnight property's arrival arrangements and choose a responsible local guide for township exploration. Lebo's demonstrates a real lodge, guesthouse, meals and guided-tour base in Orlando West; availability and the exact pickup arrangement must be confirmed directly.

Tyrone Avenue is Parkview's practical shopping and restaurant node. If the property is advertised around Saxonwold or the zoo, check the journey to that high street rather than assuming it shares the same frontage.
