Hostel Mangalem

This felt like the perfect place, extremely safe, clean, and arranged with comfort in mind. We even slept with the door and window open. Breakfast was simple but nutritious, and the price was low enough that getting a suitcase up the mountain wasn't a worry. 10/10.

Hostel Mangalem has a fantastic location, with a balcony overlooking the river and old town. The rooms are good, the beds comfortable, and everything needed is there. It's a very short walk to everything and felt very safe. Kaleope is an incredibly kind host who kept us supplied with fresh icy cold water and delicious home grown grapes. I felt so at home that I extended my stay and wasn't ready to leave. I'll 100% return if I come back to Berat.

The location made it easy to see a lot in two days, with restaurants, cafes, Republic Boulevard, and the bridge to Gorica Quarter all nearby. Even with that convenience, the room was tucked above a short flight of stairs away from the traffic. Our private room in Hostel Magalem was cozy, had an en-suite bathroom with good water pressure, a heater, a fan, and views of the Osum River. It sits inside one of Berat's famous Ottoman houses, with stone walls, wooden floorboards, and windows decorated with handmade Albanian lace, plus a pleasant outdoor sitting spot. The hosts were very hospitable, answered our bus questions, welcomed us with Albanian brandy, and prepared chilled water and berry tea. They also washed our clothes for a small fee, useful since I couldn't find any laundromats nearby. Those thoughtful details made us feel safe and well looked after, and we'd happily recommend the place.

Comfort, genuine hospitality, and Albanian character all come together at Hostel Mangalem. The owners welcomed us so warmly that it felt like visiting relatives, while the hostel's connection with UNESCO sightseeing added to its historical atmosphere. It's a truly cozy and distinctive place, and if I return to Berat, it will be my first choice.
