The low price was a plus, but I’d have preferred to stay somewhere outside El Maiten and drive in for the day. It was gloomy and grubby, and the host seemed to have lost interest in hosting. There was plenty of hot water, which I needed to scrub the bath before using it. We travel a lot, and this was probably the most unfriendly place I’ve stayed.

The place was filthy, from the bathroom and kitchen sink to the cobwebs and spiders everywhere, and the couch was muddy. I’d paid the full amount in advance, which was required to reserve, and it wasn’t cheap for that level of service and cleanliness. That’s why I stayed. I’d sincerely suggest finding somewhere else nearby with cleaner rooms and more courteous, friendly hosts. I’d told them when I expected to arrive, but the accommodation was closed and I had to call because I hadn’t received clear instructions. Nobody had told me I’d be in a cabin, and it didn’t look like a cabin at all. It was late, so I called and apologized for the hour before I said anything else. The owner was rude, called me ignorant for not understanding the written directions, and responded rudely when I asked questions about them.

We found the location very peaceful, and the owner was absolutely delightful. The rooms were warm and spacious, with wood throughout the interior and stone floors. There’s a lovely garden outside, too. If we come back to El Maiten, we’ll definitely stay here again.

We couldn’t use the lovely dining and living rooms to read or have tea because they were closed. With no café in town for afternoon tea, an electric kettle for tea or coffee would have helped, but we didn’t have hot water for mate, tea, or coffee. The owner was very friendly and pointed us toward spots in town and places to buy pastries. Our room and bathroom were comfortable and very clean.

Comfortable rooms, and a nice hotel right on the highway. The owner’s friendliness was questionable, but it does the job.
