La Reserva Virgin Lodge

The insects made sounds like aliens landing their UFOs in the backyard. A terrifyingly spooky atmosphere! Aside from that, the rooms were awesome: the double bed was massive and felt like sleeping on a cloud, and the bathrooms and outdoor hammock areas were nice. The restaurant looked extremely fancy, so I expected the food to be expensive. Converted to my home currency, though, it was reasonably cheap, but that could differ for foreigners. The food and music were nice, as was the pool area, and I liked the boardwalks through the property.

The dinner menu didn’t offer much choice, and we thought the food was a little pricey for what it was. Breakfast had a surprisingly wide range of options for such a small setup. The shower was quite weak, though that was understandable given the remote location. It’s a cute lodge style place in the jungle area of Puerto Iguazu. We were impressed by how peaceful and private it felt, especially at night when we sat outside on the balcony.

The Pacu and Dorado were fresh, tender, and delicious. The staff were always kind and helpful. There’s a lot to offer at this restaurant and lodge, but the food alone might make it worth coming even if you’re not going to the falls.

The rooms were poor quality, as were breakfast and the other meals. We ended up walking down the road to the Mercure for food and drinks. I’m not usually a complainer, but this place is shoddy. Read the reviews. For all three days we stayed, there was no tonic for a Gin & Tonic at any of the bars. There was no food, even bar snacks, between 6pm and 7pm. Service at the pool bar was so slow that after waiting 12 minutes to order fries, we couldn’t get snacks at 6.01pm on Friday. One woman behind the bar ignored our request to order before the 6pm “curfew,” pointed at the barman, and grunted. Some staff tried to help, but ALL the female staff were unhelpful. Probably the worst place I’ve ever stayed, and I’m in my 60s.
