We recently came back from our first trip to the Posthotel Achenkirch and had an amazing time. I’m focusing this review mostly on North American visitors, since that seems to be the area most in need among the more than 1,000 reviews here. The all-inclusive package we booked covered three meals a day and access to the 7,000 m2 sauna area. It also included free parking and other offerings such as daily excursions, fitness and lectures. The hotel has several connected buildings, each added at a different point in its history. Walking between them can feel a bit like travelling through time. The main floor of the main building has a picture display documenting the history of the Posthotel Achenkirch, Austria’s original Wellness Hotel. It’s also the first Wellness Hotel in Austria to achieve climate neutrality, and a great example of the broader European effort to think more carefully about climate change and sustainable living. I’ll go into more detail about the different offerings below.

The food, staff and sauna are all great. That’s the strong part of the stay. The hotel itself has a confusing feel, though. It seems to have grown over the years without settling on one design. In just a couple of hallways, you go from an old Austrian chalet look to a modern boutique style, then huge chandeliers and a stone walled underground cave. It feels jarring rather than charmingly eclectic. Dinner has its own kind of theatre, with old regulars, guests dressed in a very maximalist style, and now and then someone ready to make a scene over coriander in the food. That was quite a mix to watch, especially with the prices being so high. For a place charging €500+ a night and calling itself ultra premium, it surprised me that basic sauna slippers weren’t provided. Guests are asked to buy “eco-friendly” sandals for €20 a pair, made in Turkey. If the environmental reasoning is genuine, they could be included as they are at many high end hotels, or at least sold at cost. The rooms were also extremely hot, even with the thermostat set to “Cooling”, so we had to sleep with a window open. That makes the planet friendly message hard to square with the heat. The core offering is good, but the overpriced extras and odd atmosphere make it hard for me to recommend for the value.

The spa was spacious and really well organized, and we loved the views. Great location and service, too. Everything about our stay was perfect, and I appreciate how much effort the team puts in. We enjoyed it a lot.

I really enjoyed my stay. The room was lovely, the food was great, and the staff were very friendly. Thanks for a wonderful time. I’ll definitely be back.

We were comfortable and the facilities were nice, so the stay was mostly good. What left me disappointed was how dinner charges were handled. When we arrived, staff showed us around and pointed out where dinner is served. Nobody said dinner wasn’t included or mentioned an extra fee. When we went down to eat, we still weren’t told there would be a charge or what it would cost. We only learned afterward that we had to pay, which was very upsetting. Being clear about what is and isn’t included from the start would have prevented this. The hotel itself was good, but staff should be more transparent with guests.
