The biggest problem was how far apart our apartments were. We booked for 13 people at the same time for New Year’s, and were offered one apartment for 8 and another for 6, which seemed fine. But when we arrived, they were nearly at opposite ends of Erzberg 2, across the road from each other. We would have paid for two 8-person apartments if they’d been close together. We had no way to know the layout beforehand, since we only found out on arrival. When I brought it up, they asked why I hadn’t said we wanted to be near each other, as though that wouldn’t be obvious when booking together. Everything was full by then, the stay was already paid for, and we couldn’t find somewhere else in the country for 13 people. That was day zero. We got one key for each apartment. At first, we figured we could just leave the doors unlocked until everyone came back in the evening. But the same key was also the only way to open the apartments’ entrance doors, which had no handles, so that wasn’t really workable. The cleanliness wasn’t acceptable to us. The walls were scuffed and scribbled on, there was dust under the sofa, and the towels had been stacked in a pile. Shower water stayed pooled all day because it wouldn’t drain. Someone had to push it toward the drain with a foot for about 15 minutes. There wasn’t even a rubber squeegee or window wiper to help. In the bedrooms, the convenience switch sat right in the middle of the headboard, so anyone turning over in their sleep was likely to switch on the light. Then there was the fireworks question. I specifically asked whether fireworks were allowed on New Year’s Eve because I didn’t know the local rules. They told me no, so we didn’t buy any, even though there were children who would surely have enjoyed them. But after checking, I found that fireworks are allowed in Austria on December 31 from 11:00 PM to 12:30 AM. Practically everyone seemed to be setting them off then, except us. When I mentioned it, they said it wasn’t their responsibility and that they were sorry. That didn’t fix any of our accommodation problems.
The apartment was comfortable, and we slept well. The bed worked even for my husband, who has back issues, though the room got a little hot at night. We didn’t want to leave the windows open because of the insects, and there are a few arachnophobics in the family. Having a broom in the apartment was handy since we usually walk around in socks. The kitchen also stood out: I like cooking, and the cookware and utensils were better quality than in most places we’ve stayed. One pan was missing a lid, which I noticed a couple of times. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony in the quiet before bed, chatting and looking at the stars. Stargazing could be great there, though the artificial lights bothered us quite a bit. The location was good, and there was enough parking. It got fairly full, but we never had trouble finding a space. In summer, insect screens on at least some windows, or a fan, would help.
The reception staff were really friendly, and we could park right outside the apartments. The rooms and bathroom were clean, and the kitchen had what we needed. There was a coffee machine but no coffee. The Wi-Fi was weak in some rooms, and I missed having body soap. They provide dishwashing supplies, towels, and toilet paper, so it seemed odd not to include soap. The apartments are nice for families with kids or a group of friends.
The apartments were warm inside, so we never felt cold. The staff were friendly, and the views were great.
The mountains all around were the best part, and the rooms themselves were very nice and newly renovated. It seems like a place that could develop over the next few years. But the cleaning fee was €100, and the apartment hadn’t been cleaned before we arrived. The beds were freshly made, but the floors and dishes were dirty, along with other things. There isn’t much to do in the small town, though it works well for skiing or walking in the mountains. Reception was friendly, but wasn’t available much. The AC car charger offered 8-11 kW, but it was way overpriced. The HPC charger down the street at billa cost the same and charged faster. People with animals hadn’t picked up after them, so there was dog poop all over the grass. The kitchen had a microwave, but it didn’t work well. Also, the trim and cable channels weren’t secured well to the walls.
