Erzherzog Johann Palais Hotel

The place has a lovely rustic decor, and breakfast is generous and really tasty.

We really loved our stay. The staff were such friendly, lovely people, and the room was huge, with a big writing desk and period furniture. The corridors and plant-filled atrium were beautiful. It has all the modern comforts, yet still gives you the feeling of travelling in another time.

The location is great, but that was about the only good part of our stay. We booked a suite, though it didn't deserve the name. After staying in hotels from one to five stars around the world, I'd give this room two stars at most. A headphone slipped under the sofa and showed us how dirty the place was. There was loads of dust under the sofa bed, a dead wasp under the bed, and the curtains were filthy and partly coming down from the ceiling. The divider between the bedroom and living room didn't work, and a thin, flimsy curtain let so much light into the bedroom that our six-year-old son slept badly. The toilet flush was half broken, and there were more problems besides. The manager's response was a 30 Euro discount and the comment that nobody else had complained about the curtain before. Does that mean my complaint wasn't valid? I wish the hotel well, but this isn't how to survive in today's market. Never again.

We had a restful night in a clean, compact room that was laid out thoughtfully, and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast the next morning had plenty of fresh, tasty choices for another day exploring Graz. We'd arrived early, but the staff kindly stored our luggage securely while we went into town. They were friendly, professional, and attentive, and check-in went smoothly. Our one-night stay at Erzherzog Johann exceeded what we expected for service and comfort. I'd happily stay there again.
