Seehotel Gruner Baum

We only dined at the restaurant, but based on that experience, I wouldn’t be surprised if the hotel is just as good. It feels quite classy for a small town, and has a different atmosphere from the cozier, homier places around the square, which can sometimes feel touristy. The dining room was elegant, almost like somewhere in Vienna. The staff were friendly and seemed keen to fit in people without reservations. Every course was fresh and tasty, right down to the Esterhazy torte. It was raining, so we couldn’t sit outside, which would have been lovely beside the lake. It’s pricey compared with other places in this charming little town, but it stays open later than most, and the quality and setting are worth what you pay.

We arrived at Seehotel Grüner Baum with our family of five and found it busy, but the staff were very accommodating. They offered us a table an hour later, so we had time to explore the village before dinner. My wife and I shared the Maroni-Schaumsuppe and Kürbis-Cremesuppe to start. Both soups were rich, seasonal, and beautifully prepared. I had the Quellwasser Saibling for my main, a spring water char freshly caught from the Salzkammergut lakes. It was fresh and cooked perfectly. The attentive service and views of Lake Hallstatt made the meal memorable. A lovely place for families visiting this part of Austria.

The hotel is right beside the famous Hallstatt church on the lake, with the lake in front and the town center just behind it. Step outside and you’re already in the center, close to all the viewpoints. It’s a prime location, only a three minute walk from the ferry station, so arriving by ferry makes sense. Staff were friendly and helpful, and they have luggage storage. We booked a prestige double room with lake views on the top floor. The room and bathroom were spacious, with toiletries, bathrobes, slippers, and more provided. It had a window overlooking the church next door and the lake, but no balcony. The old property is well maintained. The elevator only reaches the third floor, so you have to carry luggage up the stairs to the fourth, and the attic ceiling is slanted. Breakfast was very mediocre for a four star hotel, just 2/5 for me. There was little variety, no made to order options, and only a two hour serving window, though the restaurant view is great. Hotel guests get preference for dinner reservations. The sauna and steam room on the fourth floor are free, but the steam room wasn’t working during our visit. There were no room upgrades, and late checkout was offered for only 30 minutes.

Dear Gruner Baum Management team, I had a wonderful meal at Gruner Baum. The food was delicious, full of flavor, and beautifully prepared. Daniel and Ramiro made the evening especially memorable with attentive, welcoming service and a genuine enthusiasm for making us feel at home. They really lifted the whole experience.
