The setting is lovely, and the service fits right in. My schnitzel, though, felt pretty plain: just schnitzel, fries, mayo from a packet and a lemon slice. Nothing was wrong with it, but it was as basic as a burger with only a bun and beef.

The fish was very nice, and the location and scenery are lovely. I’m Austrian and came to Speckhuette while visiting home, but the rest left me disappointed. The food was okay, though nothing special, and the portions felt too small for the prices. We tried the Schmankerlpfanne, Steirerkaesnockerl and fish. The dumplings lacked flavor and cheese, which stood out to me because I grew up there and know how they should taste. The waiter’s jokes might be part of the mountain holiday charm for some tourists, but they didn’t really work for me. I ordered tap water with my beer and got the “Bergchampagner” joke, which would have been fine if I hadn’t then been charged EUR 1.70. Charging for water alongside another drink felt like a piss take. I can tick it off my list now. I won’t be back or recommend it. The fish and the location earn the two stars, but the value for money is completely out of balance, and the whole thing felt like they were taking the piss.

The trout is the thing to get here, especially the one filled “nach eigener Art.” It comes from the cultivation pond next door and is fantastic. We visit every year on our ski trip. The garlic soup is great too, though once a year is probably enough for me :). The waiters are really friendly.

The menu is small, but the dishes are very good. It’s a lovely spot in the village, and the staff are helpful. I’d recommend this restaurant.

The food was great and the atmosphere excellent. The staff were alright. I’d definitely dine here again when I’m in Styria.
