Ferienhaus Römerhütte

We had a fantastic time at the Römerhütte, with plenty of room for our group of 15 and well-equipped kitchens. The weather, views, surroundings, and peace made it a wonderful experience. You’re entirely self-sufficient there, so bring anything you need. We were surprised to find that the hut can only be reached via the panoramic road, with a €40 toll per car. Looking back, it was worth it to really take in the Grossglockner, but as a self-serving group, we would have liked to include the cost in our budget beforehand. We booked it for a four-day training camp. A few basics were missing: hand soap, a hairdryer, paper towels, cleaning supplies, and enough toilet paper. For 15 people staying three nights and four days, each toilet had just one partly used roll. Apart from that, everything was top-notch, and we’d recommend it.

The scenery from the house keeps changing through the day, and at night you can watch the stars. It’s a beautiful view. The lift is 200 meters away, handy for warming up, and if you find a good rhythm, you can ski almost back to the front door. The ski route passes the house and goes to the mid-station, though we had quite a walk and ski, nearly 45 minutes. This is an amazing, well-equipped holiday home with room for up to four parties to have separate areas. Both kitchens have everything needed for up to 20 people. There’s also a sauna, underfloor heating, ski boot warmers, and ski storage. After a day on the slopes, the party hut is a great spot for your own ski party.

I felt right at home in this spacious house. The outdoor area is large, and the barbecue hut has a charming rooftop viewpoint. The location and views are beautiful. I’d come back just to watch the stars and catch the sunrise and sunset.

The location is great, and from outside the place looks fine. Unfortunately, once we got inside, it was a different story. The rooms seemed okay at first, but looking closely turned up dead insects, old food scraps, stained bedding, and old clothes or accessories in the closets. The bathrooms also seemed to have been cleaned only superficially. The kitchen was especially unpleasant. There was dirt and splatter of unknown origin everywhere, and we had to wash the dishes and cutlery before using them. The oven was filthy, with a nauseating old-grease smell as soon as we opened it. The baking tray had a layer of grease and charred food about 1 cm thick. Some equipment was incomplete, there was no working coffee maker, and the large grill pan was completely rusted. The sauna seemed not to have been cleaned at all. As in the barbecue hut, we found used plastic cups, presumably left from a previous party, and other hygiene issues. We couldn’t use the sauna. We also noticed the oven door was missing from the barbecue hut. We had serious safety questions too. Is there a legal requirement for smoke detectors in Austria? Some had been removed, and we couldn’t tell whether the ones left were working. We also wondered about fire escape routes. Almost all the windows had non-opening panes of glass, possibly Plexiglas, on the outside, so escaping through them would be impossible. We found the advice to ventilate regularly rather amusing. We tried to make the best of it by cooking in the barbecue hut and spending most of our time outside or in the surrounding mountains. The area itself was very beautiful.
