Gasthof Bad Sonnenberg

The mountain setting is beautiful, and parking is spacious and comfortable. The building's historical pictures add some character, but a lot about the stay fell short for us. The room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, including the towels and duvets, and it hadn't been properly cleaned. There were bits of paper on the bathroom floor, and the carpet under the bed looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in a long time. We'd asked for a ground-floor room because we'd had a long journey and were carrying heavy luggage, but ended up on the second floor, apparently so a group of friends could have adjoining rooms. The smell in the hotel as we walked in was unpleasant too, like something had spoiled in a fridge. The welcome at reception was abrupt. The receptionist wasn't exactly unfriendly, but she wasn't warm either. At checkout, when she held out her hand, I thought she meant to shake mine. When I took it, she said, "no, the key". Breakfast had a good range, but items often weren't replenished. We ate dinner there once; it was fine, just not memorable. For the price, we're not keen to return. Cleanliness and hospitality need attention.
