Mauterndorf is a lovely village, with beautiful alpine architecture, restaurants for different budgets, including a star restaurant, and a peaceful feel away from the crowded ski centres. There are small shops and a supermarket just a three-minute walk away. Castle Mauterndorf is a highlight, beautifully renovated, with a restaurant inside that serves local food at reasonable prices in three rooms of different sizes. The apartment itself was clean, modern, nicely equipped, and very comfortable. The owner was flexible, friendly, and quick to respond, which made booking just a few days before arrival easy. The location also suited both winter skiing and summer hiking. For skiing, the bus stop is about 200 metres away on foot, with free ski buses to three mid-sized areas: Grosseck-Speiereck (Mauterndorf), Katschberg, and Obertauern.

We were six people, a family of four plus two others, staying for a week of skiing in the three-bedroom, two-bathroom Nikolaus house. The house was comfortable and spotless, with quality bedding and furnishings, a well-equipped kitchen, a spacious laundry room, ski boot warmers, and living and dining areas overlooking the town and mountains. We especially liked the art on the walls. Mauterndorf is a really pretty town, and we preferred staying there to the ski resort, where the hotels line the road and there isn’t a village or town to enjoy if you aren’t skiing. Obertauern is a 22-minute bus ride away, and the stop is only a few steps from the house. The bus drops you right at the lifts, so it’s easy to walk to the stop in ski boots and the stay feels almost ski-in, ski-out.
