The uphill walk from the parking lot takes about 30 minutes, though we did see a few cars going up to the hut, so driving there seems possible. Once you arrive, there’s a lovely restaurant serving traditional Austrian food and drinks, with a stunning view over Millstätter see.

Staying in Almraushhütte was a real treat. The panorama was magical to wake up to, and the food was delicious, mostly made with local produce. The shared bathroom facilities had been newly refurbished, and there’s an outdoor hot tub too. Experiences like this are why Alpe Adria is such a great trail to hike in the region.

The food looked almost Michelin-level, and the views across Millstätter lake and the surrounding mountains were lovely. I tried the original Nocknoodles, a local specialty with a creamy cheese filling and mint sauce. It sounds like an unusual pairing, but it was awfully good.

The views were really nice, but the food was what stood out. I’ve never had food this good in the mountains. Definitely recommend stopping here.

I stayed in the room called “Thörl” and thought the place was fabulous, though I took off a star because the generator started up very early and ran for several hours. It seemed to be right outside my window.
