Essener-Rostocker-Hütte

I stopped for a night before moving on. The hut is great, with a nice lager and a room for stuff, but the food was the highlight. Dinner was tasty and healthy, and you could serve yourself as much as you were hungry for.

After getting caught in heavy rain on 7/7, I took shelter at the hut and stayed the night. I planned to continue hiking, not realizing snow was on the way. The owner and staff talked me out of going on, despite my stubbornness, and I’ll always be grateful to them. Thank you so much.

The location is incredible, with good hikes in the valley and plenty of routes linking to other huts. We stayed in the Rostocker-hutte, the older of the building’s two halves. It wasn’t as comfortable, but the many positives outweighed that. The staff and Huttenwirt were kind and friendly, and had no problem letting us stay an extra night. Chris even happily joined me for a Schnapps or two. It’s a great hut, and I highly recommend it for a tour in the Venedigergruppe.

The food was fantastic, especially the käse spätzle, and don’t miss their blechkuchen. The hut is large, with cozy rooms and a great view. The young crew speaks English, and paying by card was handy. We had a really nice stay.
