Speckalm Katschberg - Appartements

The Speckalm is a handy base for hikes around Katschberg and the surrounding area. Our apartment had a fantastic view, lots of space, and everything we needed. The staff were very friendly too. If you’d rather not make breakfast, Bergnest bed and breakfast is only a few meters away, and we highly recommend it.

There’s plenty to eat nearby, with several good restaurants within walking distance and a small supermarket right across the street. You can also request bread delivery. The building has a ski shop and ski school, and the staff were helpful and friendly. The apartments are spacious, lovely, and right on the slopes, so we didn’t need a car. We’d be glad to come back.

A heads-up for the drive: bring snow chains. The main access road wasn’t salted or gritted and was so slippery that many vehicles couldn’t get through. Once there, the location is hard to beat, right on the slopes and near après-ski. Our Apartment Almrausch was cozy and spacious for six, and the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. The kitchen had a filter coffee machine and kettle, but no cereal bowls or wine glasses. Bring your own coffee, filters, and tea. There was no toaster despite the apartment information listing one, though the oven worked fine for toast. The pastry delivery option in the morning was convenient. There’s also a small shop across from the hotel with a good selection, including vegan options, and drinks are available in the lobby. Be careful at checkout: there’s a relatively high charge if the dishwasher is still running or hasn’t been emptied, and the same goes for trash that hasn’t been completely taken out. The neighboring hotel has two saunas, around 60°C and 90°C. They’re small but nice, though you have to go outside to reach them. In winter the cold and distance made a bathrobe feel inadequate, so some of our group found it too uncomfortable to use them. The sauna relaxation area was also quite cold, but blankets were provided. It was convenient to leave ski passes at the hotel or the nearby ski shop instead of returning to the ticket office at the valley station.

The staff at Speckalm were genuinely friendly and helpful, and the morning luggage service was excellent. From the ski room it was less than 10 meters to the slope, which was a dream. I stayed with my family in apartment 8 Mankel from March 5th to 10th, 2023, and would gladly return. I was very satisfied overall, though the shower water pressure in our apartment needed to be considerably stronger. A noisy group of men next door partied all night, and we could hear them from our apartment and across half the building. That wasn’t Speckalm’s fault.
