Hotel Restaurant Winterbach

After hiking around the beautiful Ötscher Tropfsteinhöhle park, we stopped briefly in Winterbach to take the train up for the valley view. We planned to catch the next train back and continue hiking in Wienerbruck, but it turned out to be an hour away. The hotel restaurant only accepted cash, and we didn’t have any with us. We were hungry, thirsty, and tired, so we sat on the terrace to rest while waiting. Most of the tables were empty and there were only a few other guests, but the woman hosting kept showing her irritation that we weren’t ordering. She said, “It’s a restaurant, not a waiting room!” and after a few minutes asked us to leave the restaurant and terrace and wait somewhere else. This was the only place open in Winterbach. We would have bought something if we could, and the cash-only policy wasn’t our fault. The lack of empathy and hospitality left us with a very unpleasant impression.

The little train that brings breakfast to the restaurant and the cake were the two details that made this holiday feel special. The location is amazing, and the hotel has a pleasant retro style that feels unique for the area. Our room was spacious, with a lovely view, a very comfortable double bed, and an extra bed in a separate room-like space. Dinner was delicious, with soup, a main course, and dessert. On a cold winter evening it was just right. Service was quick and very good. In early December it was quiet, and the atmosphere was lovely.

The owner was friendly, and the bedrooms were large and comfortable. We also loved the authentic Austrian food and the famous Winterbach Torte, which I thought was far better than Sacher torte. There’s a superb country skiing resort just a five-minute drive away.

I missed the last train and bus back to Vienna after having too much fun hiking, but luckily I could get a room here at the last minute. It was affordable, the room was spotless, the bed was comfortable, and the staff and owner were incredibly helpful. I’ll be back. The view from my window looked almost unreal, like heaven, and the photo needed no filters. Just keep in mind it was cash only at the time of this review. And about the person who left a one-star review because they expected to use the hotel terrace and furniture without buying anything: if you’re travelling outside a major European city, bring cash. Who doesn’t carry a banknote for a drink? It’s unfair to take out frustration about not having cash on a small business. Places like this deserve support, not that review.
