Only after booking did we learn that at least six dogs roam freely inside and outside. My wife is severely afraid of dogs, so staying there was out of the question. We asked politely to cancel as soon as we found out, but haven't heard back. This should be stated in the listing. Our stay date has now passed, and we will probably have to take legal action to get our money back. It's extremely frustrating, and I wouldn't wish this situation on anyone.

The whole guesthouse felt like a nightmare, and never again at Pension Katherina. The place is filthy and badly neglected, with unhygienic rooms and common areas. Breakfast was awful, and there were rat droppings in the breakfast room, with several rats visible in the stairwell in the evening. The owner was drunk every day at breakfast, and the smell was revolting. The online photos don't show its current state.

We'd paid in advance through Booking.com, but when we arrived the owner asked, “What are you doing here already?” He had missed our reservation and then got so rude that he told us to get off his property. We still haven't received a refund.

For our cycling tour, we booked three rooms as a starting point. The resident dog was let into the garden at 5:30 a.m. and barked hard for a long time. We also found dog feces in the garden, parking lot, and on the path, with an unpleasant smell around the house. The guesthouse itself is very old and run-down, and they try to cover the musty odor with air freshener. When we complained through the hotel booking site, we were accused of having smelly clothes in our room, making an unusual amount of trash, or drinking too much coffee at breakfast. The serious issue of dog feces around the house was ignored. I absolutely can't recommend this guesthouse, even to people traveling with dogs.

Lake Millstatt is just a few steps away for a swim, and the location is really central. Our newly renovated double room had a lovely balcony with garden furniture and a great, peaceful view. It was tastefully furnished, with super comfortable mattresses, a large flat-screen TV, refrigerator, and microwave. The room was very spacious, with a bathtub and separate toilet, both with windows. Everything in and around the house was very clean. Mrs. Unterlerchner was a charming hostess, and her husband, Heimo Unterlerchner, was lovely and always helpful. The breakfast buffet was fantastic. Parking and Wi-Fi were free, and for our holiday budget it was excellent value. We arrived and felt at home. We'd love to come back! ♡
