The spa deserves real praise. The pool and saunas were relaxing, and the view from the water made it even better. The rooms were modern and comfortable, with a good bed and sofa and a patio looking out over the valley. An honesty bar also lets you take wine to your room after the restaurant closes, though nobody mentioned it at check-in and we found it by chance. Sleeping was the main problem. There’s no air conditioning, which is understandable in Austria, but opening the window meant hearing the restaurant courtyard’s loud crowds until midnight every night, despite the hotel’s quiet hours. The noise seemed to carry straight toward the rooms. We had to choose between overheated with the window shut or listening to drunken shouting and laughter with it open. The restaurant setting is beautiful and the servers were friendly, but the meal didn’t justify its price for us. The staff didn’t explain the winery’s wines, and the pairings felt odd. We ordered cordon bleu and schnitzel expecting something elevated, but they were no different from what you’d get at any local tavern. This place comes close to being great. I’d recommend a stay, especially if you’re Austrian, but the winery should find a way to limit the courtyard noise for hotel guests.

The early pool closing was a letdown. On a hot summer day it would be lovely to cool off before bed, and staying open until 9 p.m. seems reasonable. We’ve even stayed in small hotels with 24-hour pools. A request for quiet after 9 would probably be enough, since the other guests seemed decent and middle-aged or older, so I doubt noise would be a regular problem. There’s a lovely sense of continuity here, with the surrounding nature and earlier generations respected. The renovated farmhouse retains its character, and an underground passage links it to the newer building tucked among the vineyards. Its terraces follow the vineyard slopes, so it sits naturally in the landscape. The architecture is modern, and the materials throughout are good quality without making the rooms feel needlessly decadent. They’re simple, fresh, and comfortable. From the terrace and pool you can see castle ruins on the hill. The pool itself is small and more for bathing than swimming, but its setting is beautiful. Breakfast was very good, though at this hotel’s price we’ve had better at Wachau wine hotels. I also enjoyed meeting the owner over breakfast, a personal touch you don’t get even at a five-star hotel.

The standout for us was how carefully the place was built and renovated, and the spa was spotless. Breakfast each morning was amazing, and the dinner we had there was great too. Our spacious room looked out over the vineyards. The hotel sits among the vines beneath historic ruins, with plenty of nearby hiking and cycling routes. It’s completely dog friendly. A stronger Wi-Fi connection in Loft Herzstück and later spa closing would make the stay feel close to perfect.

The restaurant setting is inspiring, and the staff are friendly and know their stuff. The wine pairings were imaginative and well considered. With local ingredients and a flawless result from the first bite through dessert, this is a great chance to try the work of a promising young chef. Highly recommended.
