Explorer Hotel Kitzbühel

The bar and lounge were a real plus. We stayed six nights and were there almost every evening. Service was quite quick, beer was cheap, and there were plenty of pizzas to order. By reception, there’s also a big table with free tools for fixing and waxing skis and snowboards, which was great. The hotel and rooms are nicely designed, and the old wood looks good. The shower splashed water outside its area, and there wasn’t a cup or glass in the room for tap water, but those were minor things. A couple of incidents made the stay less smooth. When we first opened our room after check-in, a stranger was sitting on the bed. We shut the door and told the receptionist, who seemed surprised and didn’t believe us at first. She checked the computer and found there had been a late checkout. With no other room available, we had to wait, which was understandable, but she promised free cocktails and we never got them. Another time, some Ferrari owners started their cars together in the underground garage, setting off the fire alarm. The whole hotel had to go outside, some people in T-shirts and socks, and it was cold. Breakfast was okay apart from the stoves. There were three, one worked well, one only got warm, and one didn’t work. Every morning people tried using the broken one, and a queue formed for the working stove. A sign would have helped. I’d rather they got rid of the stoves and made scrambled eggs in advance in a big pan. All in all, it was fine and I’d recommend the hotel.

Being on the outskirts of St. Johann makes the hotel accessible, though its setting between a wood factory and an electrical substation isn’t great. The hotel was okay, but nothing about it stood out. The rooms felt dim, and the bathrooms had no ventilation. Service was often slow, and staff sometimes didn’t speak English or proper German. Breakfast was okay, but didn’t impress me.

It felt too expensive for what was offered. Breakfast could have been good, but there weren’t enough employees, and the staff on hand couldn’t keep up when the dining room was full.

My room felt really cramped, maybe only 5-10 meters of space. At my previous hotel it was more like 15-25 meters. That was pretty disappointing, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
