We stopped at Wastlbauer Bio-Erlebnishof for a MTM (MAKE TRAVEL MATTER®Experience) on our rainy drive from Salzburg to Vienna through the Wachau Valley. We’d left early, with a long day of driving ahead. Eva, the owner, showed us around her self-sufficient farm. It’s an award-winning eco-farm, and the experience advances UN Global Goal 12: Responsible production and consumption. They grow organic vegetables by hand using permaculture and regenerative agriculture, in open-aid beds, foil tunnels, and greenhouses. They keep 350 chickens, two donkeys, and five sheep. The animals provide eggs and wool, and also help with vegetable growing as pest regulators and fertilizer producers. Eva said they manage weeds with compost mulch and weed cloth, and use NO pesticides. We had morning tea there, coffee, herb, peppermint, or black tea, with freshly baked pastries, and played with her two cute dogs. Vienna, Austria’s capital, is known for its history, culture, and architecture.

A lovely young family runs this fantastic place, with modern, beautiful rooms and a delicious breakfast. There’s a great playground for kids, lots of animals to play with, and activities like the Donkey licence.

The kids were delighted by the amenities, especially the animals, as well as the climbing frame, swings, toy tractors, and cars. Our clean, modern, cozy apartment at the Bauernhof was lovely, and the hosts were always helpful with recommendations for activities and places to eat. Their home-grown vegetables and food in general were delicious. Wastlbauer’s is next to three beautiful lakes. Grabensee, the smallest and most natural, is even within walking distance. A quiet morning swim there, looking out at the mountains and gorgeous scenery, was so relaxing. Nearby Mattsee town has a nice lake promenade, an oldtimer museum, and good restaurants and cafes. We had a great time enjoying Austrian countryside life and can very much recommend a vacation at Wastlbauers.

Beautiful place and lovely vibe. Hard to tell whether the kids or we enjoyed it more. We definitely recommend it for a lovely farm experience, with beautiful nature walks and friendly hosts.
