Johannishof

Our group of 16, aged 14 to 64, stayed at the Johannishof. The staff were friendly and hardworking, and the clean rooms with balconies were great value for money. Breakfast was delicious and generous. We could use the common room whenever we wanted, and it was fine to bring our own dinner and eat there. The ski bus stop is a two-minute walk from the Johannishof, and the ride to the Kaltenbach valley station takes seven minutes. Fantastic stay!

I probably won’t come back. At check-in they charged me, then on departure told me they’d mistakenly charged €10 too little per night and asked for another €20. They gave no receipt. I’d booked by phone at short notice, but only found out on arrival that each room had one sink and the shower and toilet were shared. I don’t especially mind that setup, but I would have expected to know when booking. The manager seemed somewhat overwhelmed. I’d asked early on arrival day when the sauna would be available. I was told they’d turn it on whenever I wanted, and it was warm at 5 p.m. as agreed. The next day it wasn’t operating, and I didn’t ask again. Saving energy is fine, but they should ask guests at breakfast whether they want to use it.

The good parts: it was quiet, clean, and the staff were friendly. Breakfast had a good buffet, the ski storage was excellent with boot warmers, and the ski bus stop was only 200 m away. The beds are just 1.80 m long, with a board at the foot, which is awkward if you’re tall. The mattress was okay but could be better. There was only one power outlet in the room, by the sink. The shared bathroom had a bathtub but no shower, curtain, or screen.

The owner was very friendly and helpful, and breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The ski storage was great, and our room was clean and modern, with a recently renovated bathroom. We spent a week at the Johannishof on our 2017/18 ski holiday, breakfast included, and everything was excellent. The only downside was that dinner wasn’t available.
