On the plus side, the setting is fantastic, the beach bar is wonderful, the Bistro and Bar in front of the hotel is grand, and the adjoining grounds are beautiful. The food and snacks were good, and nearly all the staff were friendly and helpful. The young woman who checked us in was delightful. I've stayed here three times. My husband and I loved the first two visits, but this one was disappointing. We booked a standard room with a balcony for two nights. The balcony was perhaps 1 qm and faced a rooftop, so there was no view at all. Using the overhead shower flooded the tiny bathroom, even when we tried to use less water, and I ended up drying my hair while standing in a puddle. At checkout I asked to split the bill between us. The woman assigned one of us only a third and my sister two thirds. She realized the mistake after a brief misunderstanding, but didn't apologize and rudely told us to go back to our rooms while she sorted it out. I'm 70 and don't need to be chastised. I know a standard room won't match a superior one, but a four-star hotel should meet basic standards.

The cleaners and porters deserve credit. They were polite and enthusiastic. The front desk receptionist, though, kept emphasizing the hotel's rules and how little could be done. I understand higher room prices during the holidays, but I can't understand being charged so much for such a poor-quality bed.

The location and surroundings were lovely, but the food and drinks we ordered fell short. My wife's Aperol Spritz tasted pretty weak, and my panini wasn't even as good as the last one I had at a petrol station in Italy. Service was courteous, just a bit slow.

The restaurant is top-notch, with delicious breakfast and lunch. Rooms are always comfortable and clean, and the staff are really friendly and helpful. Best hotel in Velden!
