The appearance, rooms, staff, and food were all very good, but our week of winter sports at Hotel Kirchboden was far from what we expected. We stayed during the busy winter season after seeing the online reviews and photos, expecting a cozy, hospitable, typical Austrian hotel. This was the worst hotel experience we’ve ever had after many years of travel, and we won’t return or recommend it. It felt as though the hotel was set up only for Danish guests, despite other nationalities staying there too. The staff were kind and helpful, but apart from one man, they were all Danish and barely spoke other languages. There were also rules that nobody followed, and staff or management didn’t enforce them. Guests talked and shouted in the hallways early in the morning and late at night. People walked in socks through the restaurant, and went barefoot or in swimsuits through the hotel to and from the wellness area. Children ran and screamed in the corridors all day and into the night, and there was loud music in the middle of the night. When we asked other guests to keep it down so we could rest, they replied, “No, I won’t, because it is a family hotel here.” At checkout, we complained to reception. The only response was, “we hope that you can find another stay next time than.” There was no apology or anything.

It’s a nice hotel with good facilities, but I can’t recommend the restaurant. Even though you have to order your meal the evening before, it still takes 30 min. to get the food. It was okay, but I’d rather eat at any of the many other restaurants in the city. It seems to me they’ve become a bit lazy because they don’t have to compete for paying customers, since they only serve hotel guests.

The food is well below standard, and the restaurant is what brings this down to two stars. The rest is an average three-star holiday hotel in the alps. If you can opt out of the food, do that. You’d be better off with an apartment, though.

The place is a good base for a summer holiday, and staying there was still enjoyable even though the hotel feels a bit dated. Each day there were three main meals to choose from. When it got busy, they served dinner at 6 or 8, and the 8 o’clock sitting sometimes meant reheated leftovers. Still, it was a good stay.

The rooms, corridors and bathroom were really nice, and the staff were sweet and understanding. They tried their best, but not everyone spoke English, which made things hard. I have a nut allergy, and they didn’t quite understand it. Since dishes weren’t marked for nuts, I had to ask every day, which got annoying. The food was interesting and very Austrian. I’m not vegan, but I always check for a vegan choice. There was a vegetarian option, though I don’t think it was vegan. Maybe they could prepare something special, but I’m not sure.
