Alpenhotel Wildschönau

The best part of our stay was the generous breakfasts and dinners in the hotel restaurant. Brian led a friendly, professional team who went out of their way to make interesting dishes, often using local ingredients, and they were always impressive. The wine list also had some lovely bottles at very fair prices. We came from London to Oberau for three days of skiing and stayed four nights at Alpenhotel Wildschönau. Check-in with the friendly owner was quick, and they pointed us in the right direction for lift passes and ski gear. Our second-floor room had lovely landscape views. We also used the basement spa twice. The pool was a comfortable 31C, and the sauna was very well heated, despite what we'd read in an earlier review. We'll definitely be back next year!

It was a really nice stay and seems especially suited to a big group. The one problem was a broken light fixture that kept tripping the breakers. Staff said they'd get maintenance there as soon as possible, but no one came during the remaining four days, even after we reminded them. Apart from that, we had a great time.

For what we paid, we definitely won't return. Even basics like hand soap, toilet paper and garbage bags were missing. Guests are expected to clean the rooms and take the trash out before leaving, and we got no feedback from the owners or employees. If you need anything during your stay, you're on your own. We'd specifically booked because of the pool, but it was locked the whole time. The Wi-Fi also didn't always work. This was a below average hotel.

The hotel is in a lovely setting, it's clean, and the staff are very nice and all speak English. But the Wi-Fi is really poor and keeps disconnecting. The breakfast rolls seemed like they were from the previous day, and definitely weren't fresh on either of the two mornings. The odd-numbered rooms face a main road with frequent trucks and loud motorbikes, so I'd choose an even-numbered room.
