Landhotel Martha

Boutique Hotel Martha is in a peaceful, green spot just outside Zell am See, and our room and bathroom were clean and a good size. We enjoyed the balcony views, the helpful, sweet waiting staff and a very good breakfast with lots of fresh bread. Being able to make our own fruit and vegetable juice was a nice touch. When we asked for a kettle, staff brought a new one the next day. The bed was the biggest problem for me. The so-called king bed was two twin beds pushed together with a larger mattress over them, leaving an uncomfortable ridge down the middle. I'd asked about the beds before booking and wasn't told about this setup. If I'd known, I wouldn't have stayed. Getting around without a car was also inconvenient. There is a bus, but it doesn't run often, especially after 6:30 p.m., so check the timetable. The uphill walk from the station or bus stop takes 30-40 minutes and was tiring after a full day out. On two evenings our dinner plans didn't fit the bus schedule, so we had to walk back up. There aren't many restaurants nearby, and we ended up eating in town, so keep the bus times in mind. On some evenings the restaurant only has a set menu at €55 per person, which was very steep for us. Breakfast was pleasant, though later arrivals might find the savory buffet items slow to be replenished. I'd come early for the full selection.

The location was so handy for skiing, with the bus stop right outside and just a two-minute ride to a lift in either direction. It ran to a strict schedule and was never late, though on rare occasions it was full. The hotel also has ski storage, a heated boot room and spa facilities, which we didn't try. Our first-floor room wasn't large, but was fine for the two of us, with the lake on one side and mountains on the other. We spent a week here and were welcomed even though we arrived late, and could still order dinner. The meal at Flo's was delicious, as were the breakfasts. Service was friendly and helpful throughout. It's a little gem, and we'd definitely stay again.

A really lovely hotel, and the staff were kind and attentive. We had a fabulous stay, and I'd recommend it for a quiet trip as a couple or family. If you want to go out most nights, though, it can be a bit of a walk, especially when taxis are hard to find late in the evening.

The food was incredible, the best I've ever had, and the service was excellent. Our room was cozy, and the lifts are close, about three minutes by bus from the stop right outside or a 15-minute walk.
