The location was pleasant, with a suburban feel despite being a short distance from Adelaide’s CBD. Transport, cafes, restaurants, parks and shops are all a few minutes’ walk away. Staff were nice, especially Jan, the accommodation cleaner, who helped carry our suitcases upstairs. There’s no lift or concierge, and lugging heavy bags up to the top floor is hard. We paid $30 a day to park in the garage downstairs. Which apartment you get at the Old Lions complex makes a big difference. We were first put in the Annex at the back. The downstairs one-bedroom apartment was dark and shabby, with old, grubby mismatched furniture, including a large glass dining table in the bedroom. The kitchen was dated and poorly stocked with cooking utensils. We stayed one night, but construction at the next building woke us at 6.30 AM with hammering and drilling. The staff were accommodating when we asked to move. The three-bedroom apartment in the front Barton building was much brighter, larger and better furnished. It was on the top floor, so moving suitcases was difficult again. Every room is carpeted, and the carpet needs cleaning, or preferably replacing with wood or tiles for better hygiene. The building itself is quite old and a bit run down in places. It was a pleasant enough stay in a nice area, as long as you get a good apartment.

A bus stop right outside was the best thing for us as tourists. The free service took us into the city and back. Shops were close too, including cafes, a pharmacy, boutiques and nail salons. Our apartment had everything for light meals, a full-sized fridge, washer-dryer in the bathroom and even a sachet of washing powder. We each got a key. The room was large and clean, the bed comfortable, and the grounds beautiful. Staff were friendly. There was a TV in the main bedroom, adequate heating and an electric blanket. We were on the top floor, and most of the other apartments had steps, so I’m not sure how wheelchair-friendly it is. I’d highly recommend Majestic Old Lion Apartments!

We had to sort out two room issues. The TV remote was for a different company model and took a day to replace, while the main light in one room never got fixed during our six-day stay. I don’t know how housekeeping managed in the dark. The room itself was nice, clean and well appointed. Parking in the area is all managed, so be ready to pay the hotel’s crazy guest rate or deal with unfriendly council signs and park blocks away.

We might come back, but only if we could be guaranteed a main building apartment and reliable internet confirmed ahead of time. The Annex units were dark, damp and unwelcoming, with very little natural light and poor ventilation from just two windows. There was no working Wi-Fi in either apartment, and even 4G was intermittent in the Annex. If you need to work remotely, this may not suit. Reception responded quickly and were helpful when we raised the Wi-Fi problem, moving us promptly to a two-bedroom apartment nearer the front. That main building apartment was much brighter and airier. Housekeeping staff were very friendly and the apartment was clean, with a well-equipped kitchen and good utensils. Secure undercover parking was available, and breakfast delivery to the room was a nice touch. The linen was nice, but the towels were old, scratchy and need replacing. The air conditioner in the two-bedroom apartment was too small to cool the whole place in Adelaide’s hot summers. A mixed stay: great staff and cleanliness, but the internet problems and Annex apartments seriously affected it.

The front door wouldn’t lock and stayed ajar all night. We also had trouble with the sofa bed and hotplates, so we had to change rooms, which was a hassle. The sofa bed in the new room hadn’t been made up as requested. When I asked the front office, the staff member said he was alone on duty and couldn’t do it. Later, when a new staff member arrived, my friend said he made up the bed. We stayed two nights in January 26' and had a bad experience. The front desk staff were incredibly rude. Before offering apartments to guests, they should check that the rooms are liveable. We weren’t happy with our stay.
