The people at Backpacker Hostel 1849 made us feel welcome straight away. Everyone was kind, helpful, and genuinely cared about guests, and we had a lot of fun together. The dorm beds were especially comfortable, and the rooms were clean. We also enjoyed the relaxed, cozy feel of the place, especially the lovely outdoor space. We had a big BBQ on our first evening and spent it laughing and socializing. Private parking with video monitoring was another reassuring bonus. I’d happily stay here again.

Just one night here, but the receptionists made a great impression and welcomed me as soon as I arrived. It was easy and comfortable, with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. I’d come back when I’m in Albany again 🤙🏽

The common space was spacious and kept tidy, and there were shops just a short walk away. Breakfast was a real highlight, especially the pancakes. My room was neat and very clean, and the staff were lovely and helpful. The kitchen had everything I needed.

The key deposit was supposed to be refundable, but I only got part of it back after my stay, which was pretty disappointing. Breakfast also starts at 8am, too late for me to make it. It was listed as a “hotel” on booking.com, though it’s really a backpackers. The setup is basic, with no air con in the bedroom or iron, and the shared bathrooms are showing their age.

I’d read some worrying reviews before arriving, but my stay turned out quite differently. The staff were welcoming, the location worked well for me, and the free pancakes were a nice extra. The place is older, and you can see that in parts of the showers and bathrooms. Still, the staff kept things very clean, and my room was cleaned each morning during my three days in Albany. Some people may be comparing it with more expensive city hotels and expecting the same.
