The reception area looked okay, and the owner Alex said guests should let them know if there's anything they could improve. I hope they take this feedback on board, since the property has potential if it were cleaned up and maintained properly. Based on our stay, though, I wouldn't return or recommend it to travellers passing through Bourke. We stayed one night at Sunshine Gardens Bourke Resort. When we arrived earlier in the day, reception was closed. The number provided told us to come back later because check-in was only from 2 pm to 8 pm. That's understandable, but clearer reception hours or someone available to help early-arriving travellers would have been useful. After we returned and checked in, the grounds looked neglected, with weeds and rubbish scattered around. Behind a cabin near reception, several wheelie bins had tipped over and rubbish was piled around them. The BBQ area was also dirty and uninviting, with tables stacked up and beer cans and rubbish lying around. The bathroom in our cabin had a strong unpleasant smell. There were no tables, which made it hard to sit down and eat dinner, and no plates, cutlery, or other basic items you'd normally expect. A warning said there could be a cleaning or replacement charge if the sheets were dirty. It made us nervous about eating near the bed or putting our feet on it in case something got on the sheets. We felt worried about a possible charge instead of being able to relax. The overall condition made the stay uncomfortable. The cabin was unlocked when we arrived, but otherwise it just felt unclean and poorly looked after. Travellers should be able to relax where they're staying, and we couldn't.

The motel itself is great and the service is excellent, but the cleanliness and hygiene need attention. We paid $189-200 a night, which is ridiculous for a little town like Bourke. We'd usually stay here whenever we come through, because the room is normally clean and the service good, but this time was absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't waste money on it. After being out all night, we came back after dark and found bed bugs on the linen and throughout the bed. The sheets were putrid, with hair and stains. I tried calling reception multiple times, but the phone was turned off and no one answered. That feels like a safety risk. What if there were a fire or something else? With no way to reach reception, we had to sleep on the hard floor. We had to travel back early the next morning, so we lost sleep and woke up with sore backs. At checkout, the receptionist came around. I explained what had happened and showed him videos and photos, but he recorded on his phone and wouldn't show the bugs on his camera. When I showed my call log with the repeated calls, he did show that. He looked over the linen, filming it, and said there were no bugs. Anyone with common sense knows bed bugs only come out at night, so of course he wasn't going to see them during the day. I asked for a full refund, and he told me to email management. When I asked for a phone number to speak with them, he refused and insisted on email. I'm also not sure whether it was the correct email address. They need to do something about this.
The kids loved the pool, and the rooms were clean. We had an amazing stay, with lovely staff. Alan was especially kind and helpful, a top bloke. I'd recommend Sunshine Resort In Bourke to everyone.
After days out in the bush, the hot, lovely shower and enormous bed were just what we needed. The room was clean, and we felt reassured that our ute and all the gear in its tray were safe inside the locked compound. Alan and Patrick stayed beyond closing to meet us at the gate, like airport ground crew, and guide us in the dark with a light-up baton. Alan was quick to reply by text and answered our questions about places still serving supper despite our late arrival. I highly recommend Sunshine Garden Bourke Resort for a stay in Bourke!
Thanks so much for the fantastic service and for helping us out. After more than 14 hours on the road, a comfortable bed and hot shower were a welcome reward. It's a lovely, safe and secure place that's easy to find. We'll definitely stay again.
