Cairns Beach House

The bed was made and reasonably comfortable, but the unit itself was musty from being shut up and wasn’t clean. My “private” room was like another reviewer’s, since I had to walk through a dorm to reach it. It was raining when I arrived, and there was no covered walkway to the units. The air conditioning only ran at night on a timer, so the room was stifling during the day. Both faucets leaked, the hot water stayed lukewarm even after 15 minutes, the shower curtain was moldy, and there were water roaches in the shower. The unit door needs replacing, and the curtains were falling off their rods. The front grounds seemed to get more attention than the sleeping quarters. The website described it as “Your Home away from Home. A Cairns Backpackers hostel with a difference. Friendly safe and clean. Free WiFi, Pool, Great outdoor area, Fun Bar with activities every night. Free meal nightly. Real beds”. But the receptionist told me they don’t serve dinner and didn’t explain how to get on the Wi-Fi. The “breakfast” she said they provide is just a bowl of cereal. If you’re into the bar scene, this might suit you, since it was loud into the night. I’ll never go back.
