Cairns Sunland Leisure Park

The staff were friendly, and we had a quiet powered site. There was some road noise, though. The park looked run down at first, with some showers and toilets out of order, and seemed to have more backpacker vans and cabin users. Even so, we had no problems during our stay. It cost about half what other parks did.

We arrived today expecting to stay a few nights while we got ourselves sorted, and now we're looking for somewhere else tonight, somewhere with sheets that haven't already been slept in. I booked Cairns Sunland Leisure Park through Wotif.com because the reviews were great and it was rated very good, clean and spacious. We didn't know any better. The place feels 30 years out of date, and the room hasn't been modernised in a long time. The bed clearly hadn't been changed after the previous guest. It had stains and hair on it. There's no smoke alarm on the ceiling. The bathroom door doesn't shut properly, is partly off its runner, and is swollen, possibly from impact damage or water. The door frame fitting was lying on its side beside the toilet. The ceiling and bathroom walls are made of asbestos, which on its own isn't a major problem, but it has been damaged and is exposed in several places. I'm very disappointed and a bit annoyed at myself for not looking into it more.

The room was self-contained, very clean and had aircon. There was a cigarette smell, but a few goes with my air freshener sorted it out. The amenities block was old, though it stayed clean. It's close to a bus stop and some shops, with a shopping centre a bit further down the street.

I couldn't stay the night and had to leave because the room was so uncomfortable and unclean. It looked neglected from the moment we arrived, and the cleanliness was nowhere near acceptable. What we got bore no resemblance to the online photos, which gave a completely misleading impression. A very unsatisfactory stay. I wouldn't recommend the place unless its cleanliness, presentation and advertising accuracy improve a lot.
