The Espy Hostel

The location on the Cairns Esplanade makes it easy to get to the waterfront, lagoon and all the activity in town. The pod beds offer a nice bit of privacy, with a fan and USB charging, and the air conditioning is a real help in Cairns' tropical climate. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and the space is clean and comfortable. It feels like a home away from home.

Getting in late on my bus was no problem, thanks to the smooth self check-in. The rooms were great, and I liked the more private 'pod' bed setup. The only hiccup was that staff moved my things and told someone they could take my bed, even though I had another night booked. It was sorted out, though, and was a small issue during my stay.

I spent three weeks here while I looked for an apartment, and after trying hotels and other hostels, I kept extending my stay. They let me stay in the same room and even lowered the price. The single rooms felt as good as some nearby hotels. It's right in the heart of Cairns, with free Wi-Fi throughout, and the staff are always happy to help. I was there for about three months and really liked the place. The people are what make the Espy so good, both the staff and the other guests. It's got a cozy, family feel and a great vibe, and the facilities are decent without being fancy. The main downside is the loud air conditioning in the rooms and hallways, which gets annoying. The bunks could also use curtains for a bit of privacy, since right now you need to hang up a sheet or towel.
