The bistro food was great, and our rooms were a really good deal. Renee at reception was wonderful, always happy to help with any question and so accommodating. She helped make our daughter’s birthday weekend one to remember. We’ll definitely be back!

The rooms are roomy and have decent interiors, with two large beds, a microwave, fridge, and basic dishes and cutlery. Housekeeping was good and there were plenty of towels. The air conditioning took ages to cool our room and never worked very well. The reception is staffed by one person and closes after 4 pm, which made things difficult. Reef Gateway Hotel is about 6 km from Airlie Beach.

The food was good and arrived in a reasonable time. You can order food and drinks from your table, and there’s a bus stop near the pub. It’s only a couple of minutes’ drive from Airlie Beach, though it isn’t actually in town. The drinks were outrageously expensive. We paid $22 for two stubbies, about double what we’ve paid in other places. Pubs in NSW charge around $12 or $13 for two of the same beer, and this wasn’t even craft beer. I wouldn’t go back at those prices. If they lowered them, maybe I would.

The chicken Caesar salad was the highlight for me, one of the best I’ve had. It came with lots of anchovy, juicy herby grilled chicken, egg and bacon, and just the right amount of tasty dressing. Everything else was great too. I’ve spent plenty of time in Airlie but had never been to RGH before. I expected cold beers and good food, and this was a lovely surprise. Definitely get dinner here if you’re nearby.
