Dug Out B&B

I meant to leave this months ago. We spent two nights here in June 2025, and the room, facilities and breakfast were all superb. Irene was a very knowledgeable host and pointed us toward the town’s must-see spots and best places to eat. A fantastic underground stay, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for that experience. The place is about a seven-minute drive from the centre of Coober Pedy, and we found the full B&B setup very convenient. Breakfast items, South Australian port, TV, internet, covered parking and an open fireplace out front were provided, along with a great outback view. Our apartment layout would easily work for a family of four. It was clean and peaceful, and I had my most restful sleep there. Mick carved the accommodation into solid rock with machinery, and Irene, his artist-designer wife, brought it to life with real care and style. The details show their skill and thoughtfulness. I rate it six stars, even though five is my usual top mark for excellent hotels worldwide. The photos I included say plenty. Coober Pedy is near some remarkable national parks, and the town has an airport. We flew Rex and hired a 4WD from Avis/Budget at the airport, but book the car before you arrive.

I’m honestly lost for words, the dugout made for a perfect Coober Pedy stay. Irene and Nick were such warm, friendly hosts, and their hospitality made the visit feel special and memorable. A unique place that I’d absolutely recommend to anyone coming to Coober Pedy.

I stayed here long term for work and found it beautiful, with spacious, luxurious rooms and a distinctive feel from the underground setting and local artwork. There’s lots of room for trailers and vehicles, and the service is phenomenal. Irene and Mick go out of their way for guests. It’s not really within walking distance of town, which means it’s very quiet and safe. The eastern outlook is lovely for sunrise.
