The food was the standout. The Cajun spiced squid was tender and spicy, with a generous entree serving. Locally made Black pepper sausages with mash, onions and a delicious sauce were outstanding. There’s lots of old memorabilia, photos and drawings around the bar and bistro that give the place character and a local feel. It’s one of the best country pubs we’ve visited, with friendly, helpful staff, a good local wine list, plenty of quality tap beers and some classy spirits. There are five different areas to eat and drink, to suit the mood and weather. Four drinks and food came to about $90. We highly recommend it.

We held my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary at The American, and the private function space worked brilliantly for our large group. It was quiet and private, with lovely furnishings, big tables that made conversation easy, and excellent soundproofing even with lots of people in the room. The food was excellent too. A small private bar was well received, and the private outdoor balcony was a lovely extra that the kids enjoyed.

The meals were tasty and came out hot all together, which gets a big tick. Service was wonderful. The butcher’s paper on the tables wasn’t my thing, but to each their own.

I’d highly recommend the porterhouse steak. Mine was cooked perfectly, and the food and service were delicious. I’ve been before, this time bringing my parents. The American is one of Creswick’s most historic buildings, full of character and beautifully decorated. It’s also a dog friendly hotel, and being right in the heart of town makes it well worth a stay.

We had a really enjoyable Saturday dinner at The American. The Beer Battered Flathead tails came in a generous portion with a nice batter, salad and chips, and the Chicken San Diego burger tasted great. The chips were a bit soggy and could have been better. Meals arrived quickly, portions were good, and the service was faultless.
