Culcairn Hotel

The building itself is magnificent, and the accommodation is basic, clean and affordable, starting at $50. At lunch, Chef Brendan made me the creamiest, best Carbonara I’ve ever had in my 76 years. He clearly cares about food and I think he’ll go far. The whole staff were welcoming and helpful, and the owner picked a great team. This historic pub is a hidden gem in Calcain, well worth a visit. Five stars!

We came into Culcain in the afternoon and found everything closed apart from the cafes and pub. Next time we’ll get here earlier, and might try staying in the pub rooms. We haven’t stayed there yet, so can’t comment on them. The pub has a cosy feel, and the food and service were excellent. I’d just add some greens to the rissoles. It’s right in the middle of town.

The location is beautiful and relaxing, and the pub has a really nice feel. Food was amazing, and service was friendly and quick. Definitely recommend a visit.

I arrived around 11:20 and found the pub closed. I called and was told they’d forgotten to change the clocks. Manager Mick served me, then said he was lucky to be leaving tomorrow. When I asked why, he replied, “You know why!” It felt like a threat. He’d previously barred me from another pub he managed after he couldn’t work the tab terminal, and I’d told him that in no uncertain terms. He also drinks while working, which I didn’t think was legal. I’ll avoid this place. It needs good management, and the pub would be better without someone like that.
