(3.5 stars) For $136 a night, this old-school 12-room motel was a good find, right in central Forster and easy to walk around from. The rooms were roomy enough, the beds were comfortable, and the small pool was deep enough to enjoy, from 0.95-1.65 metres. It wasn’t too much of anything, and somehow we had it to ourselves on a hot day. We’re big fans of motel pools and have seen the whole range, from photos that make a bath look enormous to pools with enough chlorine to burn your skin. Finding a decent one at a budget motel felt like a real win. We were in room 10, where the bright walkway lights came through the curtain gaps. It stayed light in the room until after 11pm, which was the main downside. Also, be ready to wash and put away the dishes yourself, like at an AirBnB.

We had such a good stay that we booked again for the return leg of our trip between GC and Canberra. Forster was a lovely surprise, and we’ll make this our regular stop on the way to and from Sydney or Canberra. The motel is clearly a 1960s or 1970s building, but they’ve made the most of the interiors. Our beds were comfy, we each got two pillows, and the value was excellent for the location, air conditioning, big TV and pool. The pool was sparkling, and the beach was a short, flat walk away. Pebbly Beach was especially beautiful, with driftwood and gorgeous stones. There’s good Chinese food nearby and a Subway about two minutes away. Communication was great from booking through checkout, which mattered since we were a nuisance and arrived later than expected. Megan was especially helpful. We also left an item behind, and they found it and happily returned it to us. Thanks for having us. We’ll be back, and we’ll try not to be late or leave anything behind.

The young woman at reception was excellent and very friendly. When we arrived, the door lock was jammed, so reception sent a handyman to fix it. His manner was extremely rude. On the first night, we found a used spoon from a fit pack in the room with a white, dried substance on it. I was there with my four- and ten-year-old kids, so this was not something I wanted to find. I sent two emails, spoke with reception, and then emailed Matt with a photo after they gave me his address. I never heard back from either email.

The room was clean and the bed comfortable, but I had trouble sleeping because the outside walkway lights came through the gaps in the curtains. I saw roller blinds in other rooms, but room 6 didn’t have them.

The noise was unbearable from every direction, even with noise-cancelling headphones. The walls and floors are paper thin, with no real sound separation between rooms. If you’re not very tolerant of noise, don’t stay here. Office hours are limited, and after hours they use a call centre. The man I spoke to was rude and knew nothing about the hotel. I moved to another hotel, but they wouldn’t give even a partial refund. While I was explaining why a refund seemed fair, the Guest Service Officer hung up on me. What a joke of a hotel. Avoid it.
