At 3 pm on a Friday in late February, I visited the Sanctuary Mineral bathing in the adults-only, 16 years plus area. It was very quiet, and at times I had a bath to myself, though a staff member said it would get busier later in the afternoon. I’d try to pick a quieter time if you can. If you don’t have children, I think the adults-only area is a must. It was the most wonderful fire experience I’ve ever had, and I thought it was incredible value. I started in the beautiful heated pools, then went through to the Herman and used the salt scrub. After that I tried the cooler pool, the other hot pools, steam room, magnesium pool and dry sauna. I can’t wait to go back.

The staff were welcoming and kind. Since it was our first visit, they explained what to expect and showed us to the changing rooms. We went to the Sanctuary bathing at 10 am. A few other people were there, but it wasn’t crowded, so sharing the pools was manageable. I preferred that to the hot springs in Warrnambool, which were too busy and crowded. The experience was amazing. I tried all the different pools, including the salt pool and cold plunge, as well as the dry sauna, salt scrub and sauna. I left wanting more and would gladly come back. I’d recommend it to others.

We were staying in Castlemaine, about a 30-minute drive away, and spent the morning at the Sanctuary to wind down after a hot week visiting the area. We arrived early and had the general area to ourselves for a while before going into the Sanctuary. The salt pool was amazing, and I loved the cold plunge. I even survived the sauna. It was such a relaxing visit, and the staff made us feel welcome. We’d certainly recommend it and will return.

Morning tea at the cafe was enjoyable, and the attendant was quick and friendly. The facilities were very clean. I found the Sanctuary steam room with salt rub magnificent, and the built-in loungers in the spa pool made it really relaxing. A great experience, though probably a little expensive.

I’ve been to pretty much all the hot springs around Victoria, and Hepburn Bathhouse is still my favourite. It feels tranquil and more intimate than the others, and the staff are lovely. They seem to enjoy their work. This was my second visit, and I was glad to come back with my partner. We’d booked regular bathing, but to our delight we were upgraded to the Sanctuary. My first Sanctuary visit was in 2021, and I do think the upgrade is worth it if you want to take the bathing up a level. Staff showed us around the excellent facilities, including some new additions since my last visit. The Hammam was great, and I especially loved the outdoor pool. I left wanting to return soon. It’s worth staying overnight nearby and exploring this beautiful part of the country.
