Brickendon

Choosing the cottage over one of the convict built residences turned out to be a great decision. It was quiet, private and tucked away, with the countryside rolling out in front of us. We spent the evening on the veranda with local wine and a cheese plate, taking in the view and the site's remarkable history. The charming, comfortable cottage had everything we needed. We stayed on the last night of our Tasmanian holiday before catching the Devonport Ferry, and my husband reckoned it was the best place we'd stayed in 15 years of holidays together. A remarkable stay we won't forget.

We had a lovely little private haven, with a pretty garden and furnishings that were very well done. The breakfast provisions were among the best we've had, and the staff were friendly and quick to help when needed. Being surrounded by such a major tourist attraction was wonderful, and we preferred the atmosphere here to Woolmers.

Having our dog with us made the stay even better, and we'd definitely return. The grounds are peaceful, with lovely country views, and the history of the buildings is fascinating. Inside, Brickendon Pumpkin Cottage was comfortable and thoughtfully set up in a beautifully maintained historic building. We also enjoyed the breakfast provisions, and the fire was ready to light with plenty of wood.

There's an incredible amount to learn about the estate's beginnings and its seven generations with one family. The grounds are mostly flat and easy to get around, from kids of 9 to people aged 90, and the toilets were clean and easy to access. Give yourself at least an hour, and maybe take the walk over to Woolmers estate. Ducks, chickens, turkeys and all sorts of other fowl are around too. Historic, peaceful, and just wow. Brilliant little gem.
